Chapter 7: The Midnight Escape

The air in the study grew dense with menace as David closed the distance between the doorway and the center of the room. Marcus tightened his grip on the black ledger, his mind racing through escape routes. He knew he couldn't fight David and Clara physically in a house where they held every advantage of architecture, security, and influence. His only priority was Lily—sleeping soundly three doors down in the east wing, completely unaware of the trap closing around them.

"Back off, David," Marcus warned, his posture shifting defensively as he angled his body toward the door.

David chuckled, a low, humorless sound that lacked any warmth. "You really think you're going to walk out of here with that book, Marcus? You've walked right into a cage. Security is stationed at the end of every corridor. The gates are locked. There is no escape for you or the brat."

Evelyn watched the exchange with cold detachment, picking up her silver paperweight and turning it over slowly. "Give him the book, David," she commanded quietly. "Let him try to leave. A fool wandering the grounds at midnight provides excellent justification for our security protocol. By morning, you and the child will be gone, and no one will ever question where you went."

Marcus didn't wait to hear another word. With a sudden burst of speed, he lunged past David toward the open study door, throwing his shoulder into David’s chest to knock him off balance. David stumbled back against the heavy mahogany desk, cursing loudly as Marcus sprinted out into the dark corridor. Behind him, Clara’s shrill voice pierced the silence of the mansion.

"Stop him! Don't let him reach the east wing!"

Footsteps echoed sharply from the main staircase as security guards mobilized in response to the alarm. Marcus pumped his arms, his heart hammering against his ribs as he sprinted down the familiar hallway. Every shadow seemed to reach out for him, but his focus remained locked on one goal: reaching Lily before they did. He rounded the corner into the east wing, his breathing ragged, and threw himself against the heavy oak door of their suite, fumbling with the keys to unlock it.

Inside, the room was dark and quiet. Lily stirred in her bed, her small voice floating sleepily through the dimness. "Daddy? What's happening?"

"Get up, sweetie. We have to go right now," Marcus said urgently, flipping on the small bedside lamp and grabbing Lily’s heavy winter coat from the wardrobe. He didn't have time to pack bags; he grabbed his laptop bag containing digital backups of the family trust documents, slung it over his shoulder, and tucked the black ledger safely inside.

Lily scrambled out of bed, her bare feet hitting the cold floorboards. She looked up at Marcus with wide, terrified eyes, instantly sensing the gravity of the moment without needing explanations. She didn't cry; she just grabbed her favorite stuffed rabbit from the pillow and slipped her small hand back into Marcus’s grip.

"We're running away, aren't we, Daddy?" she whispered.

"We're fighting back, Lily," Marcus replied, pulling her toward the emergency service exit located at the far end of the east wing corridor—a door David and Evelyn had forgotten he had repaired three years ago.
