Chapter 11: The Counter-Strike

The fluorescent lights of the legal aid clinic buzzed softly as Marcus and Sarah spent the next four hours drafting the emergency federal injunction, compiling digital backups of the ledger, and drafting sworn affidavits detailing the threats made by David, Clara, and Evelyn. By eight o'clock, sunlight was streaming fully through the office windows, illuminating the stacks of paperwork spread across the consultation table. Lily had woken up peacefully and was sitting quietly in the corner armchair, coloring pictures with a set of markers Sarah had thoughtfully provided, her bright yellow dress a cheerful spot of color in the austere room.
"The federal clerk's office opens at nine," Sarah said, rubbing her tired eyes and capping her fountain pen. "I’ve marked every fraudulent transaction, attached the shell company registry documents, and included your personal affidavit detailing the physical intimidation you and Lily faced last night."
Marcus stood up, stretching his stiff muscles. "What about the property inspection scheduled for next Monday? If they send their liquidation team to the house, what happens?"
"If the federal judge signs this injunction today, federal marshals will serve a freeze order on the estate assets and issue a stay on all property transfers," Sarah explained, offering him a reassuring smile. "Not only will they not be able to sell the house on Monday, but Evelyn, David, and Clara will also be legally barred from stepping foot on the property until a federal audit is completed."
"Good," Marcus said, his jaw tightening as he remembered the look of cold dismissal on Clara’s face during the photoshoot. "They wanted to treat us like we didn't belong in that house. Let's see how they handle being treated like trespassers in their own estate."
Sarah printed the final copies of the injunction, bound them in heavy blue folders, and handed one to Marcus. "Grab your daughter and your laptop bag. We’re heading straight to the federal courthouse downtown. We need to catch Judge Harrison before he goes into chambers for morning hearings."
Thirty minutes later, Marcus and Lily were seated in the sleek, modern lobby of the federal courthouse downtown while Sarah spoke quietly with the court clerk behind the high security glass. Lily leaned against Marcus’s shoulder, swinging her small legs back and forth.
"Daddy, are we going to go back to our room soon?" Lily asked softly, looking up at him with innocent hope.

Marcus kissed the top of her head, feeling a renewed surge of strength. "We're going to make sure that room stays ours forever, sweetie," he promised.
Through the glass doors, Sarah motioned for them to approach. She was holding a signed copy of the emergency injunction bearing the official red wax seal of the federal district court. The judge had reviewed the evidence and granted the stay immediately. The counter-strike was officially underway, and the clock was ticking down toward Monday morning.
