Chapter 12: Returning to the Lion's Den

The black sedan rolled quietly through the iron gates of the Sterling estate on Sunday afternoon, passing under the towering oak trees that lined the private drive. Marcus gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white with tension, while Lily sat quietly in the passenger seat, clutching her stuffed rabbit. They weren't sneaking through the perimeter fence this time; they were returning through the front entrance, accompanied by a black-and-white federal marshal cruiser trailing directly behind them.
Marcus parked near the grand fountain in the center of the cobblestone courtyard. He cut the engine, turned to Lily, and offered a calm, reassuring smile. "Remember, sweetie, stay close to me. We have the law on our side now."
Lily nodded bravely, smoothing down the front of her yellow dress as she stepped out of the car into the cool afternoon air. Federal Marshal Miller, a tall, imposing man in a sharp uniform and sunglasses, stepped out of the cruiser behind them, walking over with a thick manila envelope tucked under his arm.
"Remember, Mr. Sterling, we serve the injunction, secure the premises against unauthorized asset transfers, and ensure you and your daughter have unhindered access to your residence," Marshal Miller instructed calmly. "If anyone attempts to interfere or violate the stay, let me handle it."
Marcus nodded, leading Lily up the wide stone steps toward the heavy double oak doors of the mansion. He reached out and pushed the door open, stepping back into the bright, sunlit living room where the nightmare had truly begun just days ago.
The commotion brought immediate results. Footsteps echoed heavily from the grand staircase as David, Clara, and Evelyn rushed into the room, their expressions a mix of righteous indignation and sudden panic. Clara was wearing her familiar blue dress, while David looked immaculate in a tailored sweater, and Evelyn stood tall in her crisp white dress, her silver hair catching the sunlight.
"What is the meaning of this?!" David barked, striding across the room toward Marcus before freezing in his tracks as he noticed the federal marshal standing in the doorway behind them. "You... how dare you bring outsiders onto private property after fleeing in the middle of the night like common criminals!"
Evelyn’s face turned pale beneath her carefully applied makeup, her eyes darting from Marcus to the official document tucked under the marshal's arm. "Marcus, this is absurd. Whatever petty grievance you think you have—"

Marshal Miller stepped forward, cutting her off with a deep, authoritative voice. "Evelyn Sterling, David Vance, and Clara Sterling. By order of the Federal District Court, you are hereby served with an emergency injunction freezing all estate assets, halting the scheduled Monday property transfer, and prohibiting any interference with the lawful residency of Marcus and Lily Sterling."
Clara gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth, her blue dress rustling frantically as she staggered back a step. "This is impossible! You can't do this! This house is ours!"
