Chapter 2: Shadows Beneath the Surface

The front door clicked shut behind Marcus as the heavy silence of the living room settled back down, suffocating and thick. Marcus tightened his grip around Lily’s small, cold hand, feeling the frantic pulse vibrating beneath her delicate skin. He refused to look at Clara or David, whose polished exteriors seemed momentarily cracked by his defiance. Evelyn stepped back from the shelf, her hand lingering on the silver frame of the family portrait as if steadying herself against an invisible tremor. The words Lily had whispered hung in the air like a physical threat, casting a dark cloud over the sunlit room.
"What did you just say, Lily?" Marcus asked gently, kneeling down to be at eye level with his daughter. He ignored the way Clara shifted uncomfortably in her blue dress, her eyes darting nervously toward David.
Lily swallowed hard, her big brown eyes swimming with fresh tears. "Rachel called me on the house phone while you were parking the car, Daddy. She said the paperwork is ready and that someone important is coming to inspect the house next Monday. She said we won't have a room here anymore."
Marcus felt a cold surge of fury rush through his veins, but he forced his features to remain calm for Lily's sake. Rachel, Clara’s younger sister and the family’s legal secretary, lived across town and supposedly managed the estate holdings. But Marcus knew that Rachel rarely acted without direct orders from Evelyn, the matriarch who controlled the family trust with an iron fist. He stood up slowly, towering over David, who finally met his gaze with a look of arrogant dismissal.
"Is this true, Evelyn?" Marcus asked, his voice low and dangerous. "Are you selling the house out from under us?"
Evelyn smoothed the front of her white dress, regaining her composure with practiced ease. "This house belongs to the estate, Marcus. It has always belonged to the estate. David and Clara are preparing for their future, and the board has decided that restructuring is necessary. Your presence here, and especially the child's, complicates matters that were settled long before you married into this family."

Clara crossed her arms, her blue dress rustling softly. "We are trying to take the family forward, Marcus. You can't expect us to live in the past forever. That child is a reminder of a chapter we closed years ago."
Marcus felt the room begin to spin slightly. He looked down at Lily, who was clutching his trousers tightly, seeking refuge from the storm of adults who viewed her as a liability rather than a human being. The realization struck him with brutal clarity: they weren't just planning a photoshoot; they were staging the removal of his entire branch of the family. The betrayal ran deep, rooted in a web of financial manipulation and emotional abuse that Marcus had spent years trying to navigate for his daughter's sake. But hearing Rachel’s warning about next Monday changed everything. Time had run out, and the battle lines for their lives were finally being drawn in the open.
