Chapter 9 - Crossfire

The red laser dot danced across the tactical vest of the intruder standing in the doorway. For a split second, the masked killer froze, realizing too late that he wasn't the only hunter in these woods. Before Mark could process the shift in the tactical board, a muffled thud echoed from the darkness outside—not the sharp crack of a high-powered rifle, but the heavy, pneumatic thwack of a crossbow bolt striking wood.

The intruder stumbled backward, his hand flying to his throat where a thick steel shaft was buried deep into the Kevlar collar of his vest. He dropped his submachine gun with a loud clatter onto the wooden porch floor and collapsed sideways into the dusty ferns lining the steps, motionless.

Mark didn't lower his rifle. He kept the barrel trained on the open doorway, his breathing shallow and controlled, scanning the dense fog that was beginning to roll in from the lake below.

"Lily, stay under the table," Mark whispered without taking his eyes off the threshold.

"Daddy..." Lily’s voice trembled from beneath the wooden boards, barely audible over the hum of the night wind.

"I’m right here, baby. Don't move."

A slow, deliberate set of footsteps crunched across the porch gravel. A figure stepped into the pale moonlight framing the doorway, wearing a heavy canvas hunting jacket with the hood pulled low over their face. The person kicked the fallen intruder’s body aside with the toe of a heavy boot, then stepped fully into the dim cabin. They reached up with gloved hands and pulled back the hood, revealing a face Mark hadn't seen in over three years.

It was Elena’s younger sister, Clara.

She looked entirely different from the polished, compliant socialite who attended Richard’s formal dinners. Her face was smudged with camouflage grease, her eyes hard and weathered by years of living on the run from the very family empire she had helped construct before turning whistleblower.

"You’re an amateur, Mark," Clara said, her voice ice-cold as she tossed a heavy canvas duffel bag onto the wooden table near the kerosene lamp. "Bringing a bolt-action relic to a syndicate hit? You would have been dead five minutes ago if I hadn't taken the shot from the ridge."

Mark lowered the rifle an inch, his bruised eye narrowing as he stared at her in utter disbelief. "Clara? What the hell are you doing here? I thought you were cut off, exiled in Europe."

"Europe isn't far enough when Richard’s net is closing in," Clara replied, stepping further into the room and pulling a fresh magazine from her tactical belt. "I’ve been tracking this team for a week. They aren't local security, Mark. They’re corporate cleaners brought in from Zurich. When they burned the federal prosecutor’s office tonight, they signed your death warrant too."

Mark stepped out from the shadows of the fireplace, his rage finally boiling over as he closed the distance between them. "Then why save me? You and your family built this entire machine on the backs of kids like the ones Richard traffics!"

Clara didn't flinch. She met Mark’s furious glare with an unflinching intensity of her own, reaching into her jacket to pull out a heavy, secure flash drive. "Because my sister Elena is a monster, Richard is a demon, and the only person in that entire bloodline who ever had a soul was Sarah. And she’s dead because of what I started."

Before Mark could reply, the headlights of three separate vehicles suddenly flared through the windows of the cabin, illuminating the entire room in a blinding white glare. A bullhorn blared from outside, shattering the quiet woods.
