Chapter 13 - The Manhole

The heavy iron manhole cover rattled violently as a pair of heavy boots landed on top of it from the street above. The scraping sound of a crowbar wedged into the rim echoed down the concrete shaft like a hammer blow.

"They found the drainage vector," Clara whispered urgently, shoving her tablet into her tactical duffel bag and pulling a suppressed pistol from her holster with a swift, practiced motion. She pointed the barrel straight up the iron ladder. "Mark, grab Lily and get behind the concrete pylon in the corner. If anyone comes down that ladder, stay low."

Mark scooped Lily into his arms, his heart pounding in his throat, and scrambled behind the thick concrete support pillar in the shadows of the vault. He pressed Lily’s face into his shoulder, closing his eyes and praying that the darkness would hide them.

Above them, the iron cover broke free with a loud clANG, clattering against the asphalt outside. A beam of blinding white tactical light lanced down the vertical shaft, sweeping across the damp concrete floor before locking onto the base of the ladder.

"Sector four is clear of personnel, but I found the drainage access hatch open," a voice crackled through a radio receiver from above. "Sending a scout down to check the lower level."

A pair of combat boots appeared on the top rung of the ladder, descending slowly into the subterranean vault. Clara braced her feet against the floor, her arms locked straight, the suppressed pistol aligned with the descending figure’s chest. The tension in the vault was thick enough to suffocate on. Every tick of Clara’s watch sounded like a ticking time bomb.

The scout reached the bottom rung, stepping off the ladder and into the dim red glow of the vault. It wasn't a private security guard. It was Arthur Vance, Richard’s ruthless fixer, dressed in a tailored black suit that looked absurdly out of place in a drainage tunnel, holding a heavy-caliber handgun loosely by his side.

Arthur didn't flinch. He didn't raise his weapon. Instead, he holstered his gun slowly, pulled out a white linen handkerchief, and dabbed a speck of soot from his lapel before looking directly into the dark corner where Clara stood with her pistol aimed at his heart.

"Put the gun down, Clara," Arthur said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the damp concrete. "You’re embarrassing yourself. And more importantly, you’re delaying the inevitable."

"Take one more step, Arthur, and I’ll put a hole right through your sternum," Clara warned, her finger tightening slightly on the trigger.

"You could do that," Arthur replied with an infuriating, calm smile, stepping forward regardless. "And then Richard’s secondary team—currently standing outside every exit of this subterranean network—will flood this entire vault with tear gas, recover the data core, and leave you, your brother-in-law, and the little girl to drown in the runoff."

Mark stepped out from behind the concrete pylon, shielding Lily with one arm. "You’re out of time, Arthur," Mark said, his voice ringing with hard, desperate fury. "The data core is already eighty percent synced. Once it hits one hundred, Richard’s whole empire goes down in flames, no matter what you do to us."

Arthur stopped ten feet away, his expression shifting from calm confidence to a chilling, calculated pity. He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew a small, sleek electronic tablet, turning the screen outward so Mark and Clara could see it.

On the screen, a real-time satellite map showed a glowing red dot positioned directly over the federal courthouse downtown—the very building where Clara was planning to route her final encryption key.

"Eighty percent? Mark, look closer," Arthur said softly. "Your friend didn't bypass the firewall. She walked right into a digital honey-pot. That data core isn't uploading to the press. It’s wiping itself clean as we speak."
