Chapter 2 - Shadows at the Gate

The heavy oak doors of the dining hall slammed shut behind Mark as he carried Lily out into the crisp, biting autumn air of the courtyard. The towering iron gates of the estate were a hundred yards down the winding gravel driveway, illuminated by flickering antique lanterns. Behind them, the muffled shouts of Richard and the frantic whispers of the dinner guests faded into the hum of the night wind. Mark kept his strides steady, though every step sent a fresh wave of pain through his bruised ribs. He looked down at Lily, whose tear-stained face was pressed firmly into the crook of his neck.
"We're almost out of here, sweetheart," Mark murmured, his voice soft and trembling despite his outward composure. "Daddy’s got you. No one is ever going to hurt you like that again."
Lily sniffled, her small fingers clutching desperately at the thick wool of Mark’s dark sweater. "Is Grandpa angry with us?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the crunch of gravel beneath Mark’s shoes.
"Grandpa isn't who you think he is," Mark replied grimly. He reached the edge of the paved turnaround where his beat-up sedan was parked. The vehicle looked miserably out of place among the row of European luxury cars lining the drive. As Mark reached for the passenger door handle to strap Lily safely inside, the high-beam headlights of an approaching vehicle suddenly swept across the courtyard, blinding him. A sleek black SUV tore through the open security gates, its tires screaming against the asphalt before cutting hard and blocking Mark’s only exit route.
Mark pulled Lily back against his chest, shielding her with his body as the driver’s side door of the SUV swung open. A tall man in a plain grey trench coat stepped out into the harsh glare of the headlights, his face obscured by the shadows of the vehicle’s roof. He didn't rush, but walked with the deliberate, heavy pacing of someone who owned the very ground he walked upon.
"Going somewhere so soon, Mark?" a deep, unfamiliar voice called out across the empty yard. "Richard hasn't even cut the cake yet. And I think you left something crucial behind in the study."
Mark froze, his hand tightening protectively around Lily’s trembling shoulder. He recognized that voice from the wiretaps he had spent months reviewing in secret. It belonged to Arthur Vance, Richard’s ruthless corporate fixer, a man who left no paper trails and buried his problems in shallow graves.
"I have nothing to say to you, Arthur," Mark shouted back, his voice echoing in the vast courtyard. "The authorities have the hard drives. The foundation is finished."

Arthur stopped ten feet away, a chilling, polite smile stretching across his weathered face as he reached slowly inside his coat. "The police aren't coming, Mark. But I brought a message from your late wife."
