Chapter 12 - Into the Depths

The rusted drainage culvert smelled of stagnant water, damp concrete, and rotting leaves. Mark crawled on his hands and knees through the dark, cramped concrete tube, keeping Lily clutched tightly against his chest while his bruised ribs protested with every forward inch. Behind them, the distant crackle of the burning cabin echoed dully through the metal pipe, accompanied by the frantic, echoing shouts of surviving private security guards scrambling through the woods above.
Clara brought up the rear, her tactical flashlight dialed down to a faint red beam to preserve night vision and avoid casting reflections against the wet concrete walls. After what felt like miles of agonizing crawling, the narrow tube finally opened up into a wider, subterranean maintenance vault beneath the old logging highway.
"Stop here," Clara whispered, dropping down onto the dry concrete floor of the vault and shining her red light toward a heavy iron ladder leading up to a street-level manhole cover.
Mark collapsed against the cool concrete wall, his lungs burning for clean oxygen. He set Lily down gently on her feet. The little girl was pale, her eyes wide with shock, but she didn't cry anymore. She simply reached out and took hold of Mark’s thumb, her small fingers freezing cold.
"Are we safe now, Daddy?" she whispered, her voice cracking in the damp air.
"We’re getting closer, sweet pea," Mark said, forcing a reassuring warmth into his tone that he was far from feeling. He looked up at Clara, who was already punching commands into her tactical tablet, watching the data progress bar on the satellite uplink. "The upload. Did it go through before the cabin blew?"
Clara stared at the small screen, her face illuminated by the faint red glow. The progress bar sat stubbornly at ninety-four percent.
"The server farm in Zurich is receiving the packets," Clara muttered, her fingers dancing across the keys with desperate speed. "If I can keep the connection stable for another sixty seconds, the entire global ledger drops into the hands of the international press corps and Interpol."
Suddenly, the red progress bar flashed a harsh, angry amber. A bold red error message popped up across the screen: CONNECTION INTERRUPTED. FIREWALL OVERRIDE DETECTED FROM REMOTE TERMINAL.
"Damn it," Clara cursed, slamming her fist against the concrete floor. "Richard’s tech team caught the packet stream. They’re rerouting the firewall through a secondary proxy in Geneva."
"Can you bypass it?" Mark asked, stepping closer.
"I need a physical hardline to the main regional relay node to force the encryption key through," Clara said, looking up with grim realization. "And the closest active relay node is inside the underground parking garage of Richard’s corporate headquarters downtown."
Mark stared at her in stunned silence. Go back into the belly of the beast? Walk right into Richard’s home turf while the entire syndicate was hunting them down like dogs?

Before either of them could speak, a heavy, metallic scraping sound echoed from directly above them. Someone had just dropped onto the manhole cover at the top of the iron ladder.
