Chapter 9 - The Crimson Cascade

The bright red alarm strobe flashed relentlessly against the stainless-steel walls of Operating Room Four, casting an eerie, frantic pulse over the unfolding chaos. The steady beep of the monitor had morphed into a continuous, soul-crushing drone that vibrated straight through the floorboards. Chloe screamed, pressing her hands tightly over her ears as a fresh wave of warm, metallic air rushed outward from the operating table.
“Do something!” Chloe shrieked, her voice cracking as she watched a bright arterial spray arc across the immaculate white surgical gown of the head nurse. “You’re letting him bleed out! You lied!”
“Shut your mouth and hold that suction tube!” Gretchen roared, her calm detachment completely shattering into a primal, commanding fury. She didn't look at Chloe; she kept her entire upper body pressed down into the open chest cavity, her fingers clamped directly onto the ruptured aortic wall with superhuman grip strength. “Sam! Charge the paddles to thirty joules! Now!”
Sam Miller fumbled frantically with the heavy defibrillator cart, her hands shaking so violently she dropped the conductive gel tube twice before managing to squirt a thick, translucent glob onto the metal pads.
“Charged!” Sam yelled, her voice breaking on the edge of panic.
“Clear!” Gretchen barked, wrenching her bloody hands out of the chest just enough to give the paddles clearance.
Sam slammed the heavy metal plates against Arthur Vance’s frail, exposed chest. The old man’s entire body convulsed violently under the massive electrical shock, his spine arching off the table before slamming back down with a sickening thud. The monitor remained a flat, unbroken line of terrifying silence.
“Nothing! No rhythm!” Sam cried out, tears finally spilling over her lashes. “Dr. Miller, he’s in full arrest! We’ve lost pulse!”
Chloe felt her knees give out completely. She dropped hard onto the linoleum floor, her pink tweed skirt soaking up the stray puddles of antiseptic and saline pooling around the base of the table. Her father’s face had turned a horrific, waxy gray, his mouth hanging slightly open in a silent, eternal scream. The man who had commanded boardrooms, bought politicians, and built an empire was now reduced to a failing collection of meat and bone on a public hospital table.
“Dad… please,” Chloe sobbed, rocking back and forth on the bloody floor, her glamorous online life reduced to this absolute, agonizing ruin. “Don’t leave me. Please wake up.”
Gretchen Miller stared down at the motionless body for a fraction of a second. The raw hatred that had fueled her eyes moments before seemed to flicker and die out, replaced by a profound, haunting emptiness. She didn’t grab the paddles. Instead, she slid her bare hands back beneath the heavy green drapes, ignoring the protocol, ignoring the shouting residents, and ignoring the terrified screams of the billionaire’s daughter.
With her eyes closed, Gretchen plunged her hands directly into the open pericardial sac, her fingers wrapping around the motionless muscle of Arthur’s heart. She didn't use electricity. She didn't use machines. She simply began to squeeze and release in a slow, rhythmic, agonizingly human cadence, pumping the blood manually through her own sheer, unyielding willpower.
“Don’t you dare die on me, Arthur,” Gretchen whispered, her voice cracking with twenty years of suppressed grief. “You don’t get to escape this easily. You are going to live to watch every single stone of your empire turn to dust.”
For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The monitor remained a flat, dead line.

Then, beneath Gretchen’s blood-slicked fingers, a single, feeble muscle twitch rippled through the tissue.
