Chapter 2 - The Sound of Shattered Glass

The pink-backed smartphone case cracked down the center, the tempered glass splintering into a spiderweb of jagged fractures. Mochi let out a high-pitched yelp, burrowing deeper beneath Chloe’s tweed arm. The silence in the hallway suddenly grew heavy, oppressive, and suffocating. Chloe’s wide blue eyes darted frantically between the shattered phone at her feet and the unflinching gaze of Dr. Aris Thorne. Her chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow gasps, the pink tweed fabric straining against her sudden rush of adrenaline.

“That’s a joke,” Chloe whispered, her voice losing its previous musical cadence and dropping into a harsh, brittle rasp. “My dad is Arthur Vance. He owns half the real estate in this zip code. He doesn’t get operated on by a nurse who takes pictures like a zombie, and he certainly doesn’t trust some washed-up doctor in a discount coat.”

Dr. Thorne did not flinch. He didn’t blink. He simply crossed his arms over his chest, the heavy fabric of his lab coat shifting slightly.

“Your father’s condition is critical, Ms. Vance,” Dr. Thorne replied, his tone chillingly level. “An abdominal aortic aneurysm does not care about your real estate portfolio, your social media follower count, or your designer clothing. Dr. Gretchen Miller is the finest vascular surgeon on the Eastern Seaboard. If she is not operating on him within the hour, he will not survive the afternoon.”

Gretchen finally lowered her phone, her dull eyes fixing on Chloe with a strange, haunting intensity. There was no anger in Gretchen’s face, only a profound, bottomless pity that made Chloe’s skin crawl.

“I don’t want her touching him,” Chloe stammered, stepping back until her heels clicked against the pristine floor. “I want a consultation. I want options. I want someone who looks like they actually sleep at night!”

“There are no options left,” Dr. Thorne said, stepping closer, his presence towering and authoritative. “You spent the last three hours arguing with the admissions desk about your billing codes while your father’s blood pressure plummeted to eighty over forty. We bypassed the waiting list because of his status, not your complaints. Dr. Miller scrubbed in twenty minutes ago, and she is walking into Operating Room Four right now whether you give your blessing or not.”

Chloe felt the hot sting of tears prick the corners of her eyes, though she fought furiously to suppress them. She had built her entire online persona on the unshakable foundation of her family's untouchable wealth and power. To be treated like an inconvenience in a public hospital was entirely unacceptable. She reached into her pocket for her backup phone, her fingers trembling so violently she could barely grip the smooth metal casing.

“I’m calling my attorney,” Chloe hissed, jabbing her thumb against the screen. “I’m shutting this entire hospital down before you let a zombie operate on my father.”

Before the call could even connect, a sharp, piercing alarm began to wail from behind the heavy double doors of the intensive care wing.
