Chapter 3 - The Code Red Reality

The piercing shriek of the overhead alarm echoed down the sterile hallway, flashing a brilliant, frantic crimson against the white walls. Nurses and orderlies scattered in a practiced choreography of organized chaos, pushing heavy carts and snapping orders back and forth. Chloe stumbled backward, the shrill noise cutting through her denial like a physical blow. Mochi barked frantically in her arms, sensing the sudden spike in human panic.

“What is that?” Chloe screamed over the din, her manicured nails digging into the tweed fabric of her skirt. “Turn that awful noise off! Do you know who my father is?”

Dr. Thorne didn’t even look back as he pivoted sharply toward the swinging doors, his stride lengthening into a rapid march.

“That is the sound of your father’s heart stopping, Ms. Vance,” Dr. Thorne called out harshly over his shoulder. “Keep holding your phone. Keep calling your lawyers. Let’s see if a hashtag can restart a failing ventricle.”

Gretchen Miller didn’t hesitate. The sluggish, robotic demeanor she had displayed moments earlier vanished entirely, replaced by a terrifying, razor-sharp focus. She ripped the medical cap from her head, letting a cascade of steel-gray hair tumble down her back, and snatched a sterile surgical gown from a passing wall dispenser on the fly. Without a single parting glance at Chloe, Gretchen sprinted through the double doors just as they began to close.

Chloe stood frozen in the center of the hallway, the world she had so carefully curated collapsing around her in real-time. Her backup phone buzzed incessantly in her hand, the screen lighting up with automated notifications from brand sponsors asking why her live stream had suddenly cut out. She stared at the blank screen, the digital numbers mocking her helplessness. For the first time in her twenty-four years of life, money, status, and online clout could not buy her a single second of time.

Her legs gave out slightly, and she slid down the wall until she was sitting on the cold linoleum floor, her pink skirt pooling around her knees. Mochi licked a stray tear from her chin, whining softly in sympathy. Down the hall, a team of emergency technicians wheeled a massive crash cart toward Operating Room Four, their faces grim and sweating under the fluorescent lights.

Chloe’s breath hitched in her throat. She gripped her phone so tightly her knuckles turned white, her thumb hovering over the contacts list. She scrolled past dozens of influencers, publicists, and sycophants until she reached the very bottom of the directory. There, listed under a simple, unpretentious name, was the only person who might actually understand the nightmare unfolding around her.

Her finger hovered over the call button, hesitating for a fraction of a second before she pressed it. The line rang twice before a deep, trembling voice answered on the other end.

“Chloe?” a woman’s voice whispered, thick with exhaustion and ancient grief. “Tell me your father is going to be okay.”

Chloe swallowed hard, the taste of ash in her mouth. “Mom… the zombie doctor is operating on him right now.”
