Chapter 10 - The Rhythm of Vengeance

The frail muscle beneath Gretchen’s fingers twitched again, a microscopic spasm that sent a microscopic ripple through the pooled blood in the cavity. Sam Miller leaned in close over the monitor, holding her breath so tightly her chest ached. The flat, uninterrupted drone of the alarm suddenly cut out, replaced by a slow, agonizingly faint thump. Then another.

“Sinus rhythm returning,” Sam whispered, her voice trembling with disbelief as the green line on the screen began to crawl upward in jagged, uneven spikes. “Blood pressure is registering at sixty over forty. He’s back. He’s actually back.”

Gretchen let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders sagging slightly beneath the heavy, blood-soaked gown. She slowly withdrew her hands from the open chest, holding her crimson-stained gloves up in the harsh light as if inspecting the damage she had just prevented. She didn't look triumphant; she looked remarkably tired, carrying the weight of a ghost that refused to be laid to rest.

Chloe scrambled up from the bloody floor, her pink tweed skirt stained with dark red smears that she didn't even notice anymore. She lunged toward the edge of the operating table, pressing her trembling hands against the sterile rail to stare down at her father. Arthur Vance’s eyes fluttered open once more, his breathing shallow and rattling, but the vacant, waxy gray tone of his skin had faded into a pale, living pink.

“Dad?” Chloe choked out, her voice a fragile, broken plea. “Can you hear me?”

Arthur turned his head toward her with infinite slowness. His lips parted, and a dry, rasping cough racked his frame before he managed to form the words.

“Chloe… get out… of here,” Arthur murmured, his voice barely louder than the hum of the overhead lights. “This place… isn’t safe… for you.”

“It’s the only safe place left in your entire empire, Arthur,” Gretchen said coldly, stripping off her ruined gloves and tossing them into a biohazard bin with a sharp slap. She pulled down her surgical mask, revealing a face lined with deep wrinkles carved by decades of unrelenting stress and sleepless nights. She looked down at the billionaire with eyes that held the chilling clarity of a judge passing a final, irreversible sentence. “Your little empire of debt, fraud, and stolen patents is already crumbling to the ground outside these doors. This hospital is the only place on earth where you are entirely at my mercy.”

Dr. Thorne stepped into the room, holding a encrypted secure tablet in his hand, his expression grave and unreadable. He bypassed Chloe entirely, walking directly up to Gretchen and holding the screen out for her to inspect.

“Federal marshals just executed a search warrant on the Vance Corporation headquarters downtown,” Dr. Thorne said quietly, his voice carrying clearly over the hum of the monitors. “All corporate assets have been frozen. The board of directors is resigning en masse, and the SEC has formally issued an indictment for corporate fraud and intellectual property theft spanning twenty years.”

Arthur Vance let out a sharp, choked gasp, his hand twitching convulsively against the leather restraints as his eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror.

“No…” Arthur wheezed, his chest heaving violently against the sutures. “That’s… impossible. I have judges in my pocket. I have… politicians.”

“You had them, Arthur,” Gretchen replied softly, walking toward the scrub sink to wash the blood from her hands. “When you stole Miller-Vance Diagnostics, you thought you were erasing a failed startup. You didn’t realize you were creating a paper trail that took two decades to quietly build, verify, and deliver directly to the Department of Justice.”

Chloe stared between Dr. Thorne, Gretchen, and her father, the room spinning violently around her. The luxurious penthouse apartments, the private jets, the endless VIP parties, the millions of adoring online followers—it had all been built on a foundation of stolen blood and ruined lives.

“Mom knew,” Chloe whispered, the horrifying realization finally dawning on her. “That’s why she told me not to scream. That’s why she wasn't surprised.”

Gretchen turned off the water faucet, the harsh squeak echoing loudly in the silent room. She grabbed a paper towel, dried her steady, elegant hands, and turned to face Chloe with a look that wasn't cruelty, but something far more terrifying: complete, absolute indifference.

“Your mother spent twenty years trying to convince your father to return what he stole,” Gretchen said, walking slowly toward the operating room doors. “He refused every single time. So we decided to use a different kind of leverage.”

Before Chloe could demand an explanation, the heavy double doors pushed open once more, revealing two armed federal agents in plainclothes standing in the hallway behind Dr. Gretchen Miller.
