Chapter 4 - The Signature That Wasn't His

The crisp pages rustled loudly in the quiet bedroom as David’s eyes scanned the fine print of the forged power of attorney document. The signature at the bottom was an almost flawless imitation of his own handwriting, mimicking the sharp cross of the 'D' and the looping flourish of the 'V' that he had practiced since college. But there was one fatal flaw that only a true expert—or the man himself—would ever notice: the pressure stroke went upward instead of down on the final letter. Someone had traced it, or worse, used a digital matrix to replicate it over his tax returns.
David’s breath hitched in his throat. This wasn't a sudden, heat-of-the-moment breakdown driven by marital stress or financial panic. This was a premeditated execution plan disguised as a tragic medical emergency, orchestrated down to the very minute he usually walked down for his morning coffee.
He clutched the fraudulent documents to his chest, his mind racing through the timeline of the past six months. Elena had been pushing him to take out a new life insurance policy with a massive payout clause, insisting it was for Lily’s future education fund. She had managed every detail of the application, scheduling the medical exams and handling the paperwork while he was buried in corporate litigation at the office.
Downstairs, a sharp, muffled scuffle echoed up through the floorboards, followed by Marcus shouting a warning. David didn't hesitate. He thrust the forged papers inside his white dress shirt, rushed back to the bedroom door, and sprinted down the staircase just in time to see Elena wrenching her arm free from Marcus’s grip.
"Let go of me, you hypocrite!" Elena screamed, lunging toward the entryway closet where her car keys and designer handbag lay on the mahogany console table. She grabbed the keys with frantic speed, her blonde hair flying wildly around her face as she spun around to face David, who was descending the last three steps.
"You're not going anywhere, Elena," David said, his voice deadly calm as he pulled out his smartphone and dialed 911. "The police are already on their way, and I have the power of attorney papers with your signature forged on them right here in my shirt."
Elena froze, the keys dangling from her trembling fingers. For a brief second, the defiance in her eyes flickered out, replaced by a hollow, defeated emptiness. But then a strange, chilling smile crept onto her lips—a smile that sent a shiver straight down David’s spine.

"Do you really think the police will care about a piece of paper, David?" she whispered softly, taking a slow step toward the front door. "By the time they arrive, you won't even remember my name."
