Chapter 3 - The Threat in the Drawer

Elena’s knees buckled slightly, but she caught herself against the edge of the mahogany dining table, her fingernails digging deep into the polished wood. The desperate warmth that usually defined her personality had vanished completely, replaced by a cold, calculating glare that David had never seen in all their years together. The mask had slipped, revealing a stranger hiding beneath the surface of the devoted mother and wife.

"If you walk out that front door with that jar, David, you won't just be destroying our marriage," Elena whispered, her voice dropping to a harsh, venomous hiss that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. "You’ll be destroying everything you’ve worked for at the firm. Everything. I hold the keys to accounts you don't even know exist."

David stared at her in utter disbelief. "Are you threatening me? In front of our daughter? You just tried to poison me with whatever chemical or toxin is in this cup, and you're standing there threatening my career?"

"I didn't try to kill you, you paranoid idiot!" Elena snapped, her composure finally shattering into genuine rage as she stepped toward him. "You were going to ruin us anyway! You were going to sign those papers tomorrow morning, weren't you? The ones that give your business partner full control and leave us with nothing?"

Lily whimpered, burying her face deeper into David’s trousers, and David immediately shielded the little girl with his body. "What papers are you talking about, Elena? I haven't signed any partnership transfer papers. What are you talking about?"

"The ones in my bedside drawer," Elena spat out before she could stop herself, her eyes widening as she realized she had just confessed to a level of deceit that went far beyond the morning coffee. She clamped her mouth shut, her chest heaving as she stared at the glass jar in David's hand.

David felt a cold sweat break out across his forehead. He hadn't told anyone about the buyout offer from his firm—not even Marcus. The only person who had access to his home office desk, his private files, and his morning routine was Elena. The betrayal wasn't just about a poisoned cup of coffee; it was a deep, calculated conspiracy involving his life, his assets, and his company.

"Stay here," David instructed Marcus, who was standing watch by the hallway entrance. "If she moves toward the back exit, stop her."

David hurried up the curved staircase, taking two steps at a time, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He burst into the master bedroom, rushing past the king-sized bed and pulling open the lower drawer of Elena's ornate white nightstand. Beneath a stack of scented stationery and spare keys, he found a locked leather portfolio he had never seen before. Using a heavy brass paperweight from the desk, he smashed the small brass clasp, flipping the cover open to reveal a stack of signed documents granting full power of attorney to a shell company in the Cayman Islands—bearing his own forged signature.
