Chapter 13 - The Empty Room

The siren on Officer Miller’s cruiser wailed incessantly as it tore down the highway at breakneck speed, the tires squealing around every sharp curve. David sat in the passenger seat, his knuckles white as he gripped the dashboard, a cold terror gripping his chest so tightly he could barely breathe. Lily was gone. The syndicate had anticipated the raid, using the cabin trap as a diversion while a secondary team snatched the child from the motel room.
Within ten minutes, the cruiser slid to a violent halt outside the neon-lit sign of the motel. Officer Miller kicked the door of Room 14 open, his pistol raised, sweeping the dark, empty space with his flashlight beam.
The room was in shambles. The window glass was shattered outward, jagged shards glittering under the harsh fluorescent lights. Lily’s stuffed rabbit lay abandoned on the floor near a pool of dark liquid where the medical pump had been smashed into pieces.
David stumbled into the room, falling to his knees beside the stuffed rabbit. He picked it up, pressing it against his chest as hot tears streamed down his face. "Lily! Lily, where are you?"
Marcus stepped out from the adjoining bathroom, holding a bloodstained handkerchief against a deep gash on his forehead. "David, I'm so sorry. I arrived just as they broke the window. I tried to stop them, but there were two of them. They hit me with a heavy iron lamp and threw her into the back of an unmarked van."
"Which way did they go?" David demanded, springing to his feet with a desperate, manic energy.
"North, toward the old industrial shipping yards by the harbor," Marcus said, wincing in pain. "David... they left something on the nightstand for you."
David turned slowly toward the laminate bedside table. Resting beside an empty coffee cup was a single white porcelain shard—the exact match to the teacup that had shattered in his dining room hours earlier. Next to it was a handwritten note scrawled in neat, elegant cursive.
“If you want to see your daughter again, bring the original corporate ledger to Pier 4 alone at midnight. No police, no tricks. Just you and the keys to your empire.”

David looked at his watch. It was 11:45 PM. He had fifteen minutes.
