Chapter 5

The digital clock on the dashboard read 7:45 PM as Julian pulled his car into the driveway of the ridge house. The exterior lights were already automated, casting a warm amber glow over the geometric lines of the cedar siding. He killed the engine, sitting in the silence of the cabin for a moment to steady his breathing. He had spent the afternoon consulting with a family law attorney downtown, learning the harsh realities of custody laws, medical guardianship, and the burden of proof required to secure an emergency restraining order without causing greater trauma to Chloe.

Julian stepped out into the damp evening air and walked up the front steps. He unlocked the heavy mahogany front door and stepped inside. The house was quiet, save for the low hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

“Julian?” Elena’s voice floated down from the upstairs hallway.

“I’m back,” he called out, closing the door behind him with deliberate calmness.

He walked up the open-riser staircase, his footsteps echoing softly against the oak treads. Elena was standing at the end of the corridor near Chloe’s bedroom door. She was wearing her grey satin pajamas again, her long dark hair loose around her shoulders. She looked calm, almost serene, holding a fresh glass of milk and the small silver medicine tray in her hands.

“You’re late for dinner,” Elena said gently, tilting her head with a practiced air of wifely concern. “I kept your meal warm in the oven. How was your meeting with Dr. Vance?”

Julian stopped three steps short of the landing. He looked at the glass of milk resting on the tray, noting the absence of condensation this time—she had learned from the previous night’s mistake.

“The meeting was illuminating,” Julian said evenly, stepping onto the landing. He maintained a safe distance, keeping his body language restrained, mirroring the cautious choreography of their domestic standoff. “Dr. Vance clarified a few things about Chloe’s recovery timeline.”

Elena’s eyes narrowed by a fraction of a millimeter. The micro-expression of surprise vanished instantly, replaced by her standard mask of composed authority. “Did he? I hope he reassured you that she is progressing as expected.”

“Not entirely,” Julian replied, walking past her toward Chloe’s bedroom door. He pushed it open gently.

Inside, the room was bathed in the soft pink glow of a nightlight. Chloe was lying in bed, wrapped snugly in her pink blanket. The medical patch on her forehead gleamed stark white against her skin. Her dark eyes were wide, fixed on the doorway with a mixture of hope and intense anxiety. When she saw Julian, her small shoulders relaxed slightly, but the moment Elena stepped into the doorway behind him, the little girl pulled the pink blanket up anxiously to her chin, retreating into its fabric like a turtle pulling into its shell.

“Time for your medicine, sweet girl,” Elena said softly, stepping into the room and walking toward the bedside table with the tray.

“Put the tray down, Elena,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a register that brooked no argument.

Elena paused halfway across the carpet. She turned her head slowly, looking at Julian with a gaze that carried a silent, razor-sharp warning. The air in the bedroom grew thick, charged with an invisible current that made the hairs on the back of Julian’s neck stand on end.
