Chapter 14

The downtown architectural studio was silent, bathed in the pale blue glow of computer monitors left running in standby mode. Julian keyed open the heavy glass double doors, his footsteps echoing sharply against the polished concrete floor. Detective Miller followed closely behind, his hand resting near his service weapon as they moved toward Julian’s private drafting vault in the rear of the studio.
Julian punched the digital access code into the vault door, and the heavy steel panel hissed open. Inside, floor-to-ceiling metal flat files contained decades of structural drawings, site surveys, and structural integrity calculations. Julian dropped to his knees before the third drawer down, pulling the heavy steel sliding mechanism outward with a harsh metallic scrape.
“Here,” Julian muttered, pulling out a rolled set of translucent architectural vellum labeled Project Ridge: Phase Two Modifications. He carried the large sheet to the central light table, pressing the corners down with heavy brass weights.
The illuminated glass surface cast a sharp, brilliant white glow upward, revealing intricate black ink lines detailing the framing, plumbing lines, and electrical grid of the house. But as Julian traced his fingers along the basement staircase elevation, he noticed a series of pencil annotations scrawled in the margin—not his own handwriting, and not the structural engineer's. The handwriting belonged to Elena.
Beside the landing of the basement stairs where Sarah had suffered her fatal fall, Elena had carefully drawn an unapproved structural addition: a concealed latch-release mechanism integrated directly into the handrail support bracket. A mechanical lever designed to cause the stair tread to momentarily collapse under sudden weight.
Detective Miller leaned over the light table, his eyes narrowing as he studied the intricate pencil alterations. “She didn’t just witness the fall, Mr. Reynolds. She engineered the conditions for it. This is premeditated structural sabotage disguised as an accidental trip.”
Julian felt the ground give way beneath him. The chilling realization settled deep into his bones—Sarah’s death had never been a tragic accident. It had been the first elimination in Elena’s methodical campaign to claim this family, a calculated removal of an obstacle designed to make room for a new mistress of the ridge house.
“We have enough,” Julian whispered, staring down at the glowing vellum lines that mapped out a murder disguised as faulty carpentry. “We have her methodology, her motive, and her signature.”

“We do,” Miller agreed, pulling out his phone to issue an all-points bulletin across the tri-county area. “And
