Chapter 10

Julian dropped from the edge of the sunroom roof onto the gravel driveway below, absorbing the jarring impact with his legs and stumbling slightly before regaining his balance. Chloe was still clutched tightly in his arms, her small frame shivering beneath the pink blanket as the cold Seattle wind cut through her pajamas. The medical patch on her forehead was peeling slightly at the edges from sweat and exertion.

He didn’t look back toward the house. He sprinted across the gravel, his boots crunching loudly in the stillness of the ridge, and reached his car parked near the detached garage. His hands shook violently as he fumbled for the key fob, pressing the unlock button with his thumb until the vehicle’s hazard lights flashed twice in the darkness.

Julian yanked the rear door open, settling Chloe safely into the child safety seat and wrapping an extra woolen coat he kept in the trunk around her shoulders. “You’re okay, princess. We’re safe now,” he murmured, stroking her dark hair before slamming the door shut and sliding into the driver’s seat.

He started the engine, the V6 motor roaring to life in the quiet night air. As he shifted into reverse and backed rapidly down the winding driveway, his headlights swept across the front facade of the house. Elena was standing on the front porch now, bathed in the amber glow of the entryway lights. She wasn’t running after the car; she stood completely motionless, her arms relaxed at her sides, watching his departure with that same unnerving, clinical calm. It was the posture of a chess player who had simply lost a minor piece while maintaining control of the entire board.

Julian spun the steering wheel, spraying gravel across the lawn as he turned onto the main suburban road leading toward downtown Seattle. He didn’t head for home; he drove straight toward the regional police precinct located off Highway 9. The digital clock on the dashboard glowed 1:15 AM as he navigated the empty streets, the harsh sodium-vapor streetlights casting long, distorted shadows across the asphalt.

Inside the car, Chloe’s breathing had grown slower, deeper. The adrenaline crash was setting in, compounded by the residual effects of the sedative compounds still lingering in her bloodstream. Julian glanced frequently in the rearview mirror, his chest tightening with every shallow breath his daughter took.

“Just stay awake a little longer, sweetheart,” Julian spoke aloud, his knuckles white against the leather steering wheel. “We’re almost there.”

The precinct building appeared ahead—a modern brick structure illuminated by security floods, glowing like a beacon of relative safety in the dark. Julian pulled into the visitors' parking lot, shifted into park, and cut the engine. The sudden silence inside the cabin felt heavy, pregnant with the terrifying knowledge that everything he thought he knew about his family had been an elaborate, meticulously engineered illusion.
