Chapter 8 - The Tunnel's Secret

The piercing shriek of the siren reverberated off the damp concrete walls, bouncing inside the confined basement space until David’s ears rang with sharp pain. Mark flinched, curling into a tight ball on the floor and covering his matted hair with both hands, trembling violently as if expecting blows to rain down upon him.

David cursed under his breath, realizing that opening the tunnel hadn't just granted them a passage out; it had tripped a security tripwire connected directly to the main house. Elena knew someone was down here breaching her perimeter. He couldn't hesitate. Grabbing Mark by the shoulder of his tattered shirt, David hauled the emaciated man to his feet.

"Come on, Mark! Stand up! We have to move right now!" David shouted over the deafening wail of the alarm.

Mark stumbled forward, his stick-thin legs buckling once before he caught his balance against the edge of the open iron door. "I... I can't walk fast, David. My legs... they atrophy years ago..."

"I'll carry you if I have to," David grunted, wrapping one of Mark's arms around his own neck and supporting his waist with a firm grip.

Together, they plunged into the dark, narrow tunnel. The air inside the concrete tube was stale and smelled sharply of rusted iron and stagnant water, but it offered a direct vector away from the trapped basement. Behind them, the iron door remained open, bathing the mouth of the tunnel in the green glow of the disabled security system.

As they shuffled down the incline, the beam of light from the open door began to shrink, replaced by absolute darkness ahead. David reached out with his free hand, sliding his palm along the rough, damp concrete wall to guide their steps. Every second that ticked by felt like an eternity, knowing that upstairs, Elena was loading Lily and Chloe into her car, preparing to vanish into the fading afternoon light.

After what felt like miles of agonizing progress, a faint circle of natural daylight appeared ahead, filtering through a heavy iron grate that marked the end of the tunnel. Pushing Mark gently against the tunnel wall, David sprinted the final few yards to the end of the passage. He grabbed the heavy iron grate from the inside and shoved upward with all his remaining strength.

The rusted hinges protested with a loud, metallic shriek, and the grate swung open, spilling fresh, cool evening air into the tunnel. David hauled himself up and out into the overgrown brush of the woods behind his property, coughing as the fresh air hit his lungs. He immediately reached back down, grabbing Mark’s frail arms and hauling the prisoner out of the subterranean nightmare into the safety of the twilight woods.
