Chapter 10 - The Highway Pursuit

The silver sedan kicked up a cloud of white dust as it surged down the driveway, its tires squealing sharply onto the asphalt of the quiet suburban street. David sprang from the brush, leaving Mark behind the safety of the oak tree with a hasty promise to send help. He sprinted across the rough lawn toward his own pickup truck parked near the side garage, his boots tearing up the manicured grass.
He threw himself into the driver's seat of the truck, the familiar leather steering wheel feeling like a lifeline. His hands shook as he jammed the key into the ignition and twisted it hard. The engine roared to life instantly, a deep, rumbling growl that rattled the dashboard. Without a second thought, David slammed the gearshift into drive and stomped hard on the gas pedal.
The truck leaped forward, tires spinning against the gravel before catching traction and rocketing out of the driveway. In the distance, the tail lights of Elena’s silver sedan were already rounding the corner onto the main county highway that led out toward the dense mountain passes.
David pressed the accelerator all the way to the floorboard, the engine screaming in protest as the speedometer needle climbed steadily upward. The twilight sky was fading into a bruised purple, and the streetlights along the highway began to flicker on one by one, casting long, erratic beams of light across the windshield.
As David rounded the same corner, he caught sight of the silver sedan weaving recklessly through sparse evening traffic a quarter-mile ahead. He checked his rearview mirror for a split second; Grandfather Arthur was still standing on the porch, a tiny, frail silhouette under the flickering yellow porch light, watching them vanish into the gathering night.
David gripped the steering wheel tighter, his knuckles aching under the pressure. Every memory of Lily’s bruised arms, every tear she had shed in that suffocating hallway, fueled a blazing inferno of protective fury in his chest. He wasn't going to let Elena get away with her madness. He was going to end this nightmare tonight, no matter what it took.

The gap between the vehicles began to close as David pushed his truck past the speed limit, cutting through the winding two-lane highway that climbed steadily into the foothills. Up ahead, the steep cliffs and dense pine forests swallowed the road, creating a treacherous maze of blind curves and sheer drops where few cars traveled after dark.
