Chapter 14 - The Final Plunge

The metal frame of the silver sedan groaned in protest as gravity claimed it entirely. David lunged into the tilting passenger compartment, his hands locking firmly around Chloe’s harness just as the car began its fatal descent into the rocky canyon. With a fierce burst of adrenaline, he yanked the little girl out of the seat and hurled both of them backward out onto the solid earth of the overlook.
They hit the dirt hard, sliding a few feet across the gravel as a cloud of dust rose around them. A fraction of a second later, the empty sedan vanished over the edge, its headlights cutting wild arcs through the dark abyss before crashing violently onto the rocks three hundred feet below with a deafening metallic roar and a blinding flash of fire.
Silence descended upon the overlook, broken only by the crackle of distant flames far down in the canyon and the wailing sirens of the police cars now parked haphazardly across the clearing.
Elena dropped to her knees near the very edge of the precipice, staring down into the dark chasm where her car had disappeared. Her floral dress was torn and stained with dirt, her gold hoop earrings missing one half, her carefully styled bun completely unraveled into a wild mess of dark hair. She didn't cry; she just stared blankly into the firelight reflecting off the canyon walls, rocking back and forth in absolute, hollow silence.
Police officers rushed forward, immediately placing handcuffs on Elena as she offered no resistance whatsoever, her body completely limp and devoid of fight. Other officers rushed to David and the children, wrapping warm rescue blankets around Lily and Chloe, who clung to their father as if he were the only solid thing left in the universe.
David held his two daughters close, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes as the overwhelming weight of the past twenty-four hours crashed down upon his shoulders. The illusion was shattered. The house on the suburban street would never feel normal again, and the deep scars left behind by Elena's reign of terror would take a lifetime to heal, but the nightmare was finally over.

As the paramedics led Mark out of the transport ambulance parked by the highway to check his vitals, David looked down at Lily’s small, bruised arms resting against his chest. He gently kissed the top of her head, whispering softly into her hair as the flashing red and blue lights illuminated the dark mountain pass.
