Chapter 2 - Shadows Beneath the Floorboards

The mention of the basement hung in the stifling hallway air like a toxic cloud. David felt Lily tighten her grip around his neck, burying her tear-stained face deeper into his shoulder as if trying to hide from the very word. Arthur stood near the doorway, his frail hand gripping the wooden doorframe for support, his chest rising and falling beneath his blue shirt.

"Arthur, shut your mouth," Elena hissed, lunging forward with a sudden, desperate speed. Her gold hoop earrings clinked sharply against her jaw as she reached out to grab her father’s arm, but David stepped squarely between them.

"Don't you dare touch him," David warned, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous whisper. He looked down at the old man, his eyes demanding answers. "Arthur. What did you mean? What is down there?"

Arthur swallowed hard, his cloudy blue eyes avoiding Elena’s murderous glare. "It’s not just a storage room, David. Two years ago, right after the first child disappeared from the neighborhood... Elena started keeping records down there. Files, photographs, things that don't belong to our family."

Elena let out a sharp, hysterical laugh that sounded entirely unhinged. "He's losing his mind, David! Look at him! He has dementia! He forgets to take his medication for days at a time!"

"I am entirely of sound mind, Elena," Arthur shot back, his voice surprisingly firm for a man of his age. He pointed a trembling, arthritic finger toward the small white door beneath the staircase. "The key is on her key ring. The heavy brass one she wears around her neck like a talisman."

David’s gaze dropped instantly to the delicate gold chain resting against Elena’s collarbone. Suspended from it was a jagged, old-fashioned brass key that he had never noticed before, despite living in this house for six years. Elena’s hand flew to her chest, her fingers curling defensively over the metal key as if protecting her beating heart.

"You're not opening that door," Elena whispered, her voice trembling not with fear, but with a cold, calculated threat. "If you unlock that basement, David, you won't just destroy this family. You'll make sure none of us ever walk out of this house alive."
