Chapter 7 - The Hidden Ledger

The encrypted message on Julian’s watch screen was brief, but it made the muscle in his jaw tighten instantly. He looked up from the glowing display, meeting Clara’s observant gaze with a flicker of sudden urgency in his eyes.

“What is it?” Clara asked, her instincts immediately locking onto the sudden shift in his demeanor. “Is there a complication with the corporate restructuring?”

“Not with the corporation,” Julian said, sliding his hand from her shoulder to gently cup her elbow, guiding her toward the parlor's private exit. “It’s about the personal accounts Arthur left behind. My forensic team just accessed the off-shore shell companies he was using to hide his personal liquidity. There’s something there that doesn't add up.”

Clara frowned, following him out onto a quiet, carpeted corridor that bypassed the noisy ballroom below.

“What kind of something? I audited our joint holdings before we separated. Arthur was aggressive with his spending on luxury cars and high-society clubs, but he wasn’t sophisticated enough to run a deep-tier offshore laundering operation on his own.”

“Exactly,” Julian murmured, his stride long and purposeful as they descended a private spiral staircase toward the ground floor executive suites. “He wasn’t smart enough. Which means someone else was pulling the strings, coaching him from the shadows.”

They stepped out into a dimly lit subterranean vault room lined with biometric terminals and secure data servers. Marcus Sterling’s chief technical officer, a sharp-eyed young woman named Chloe with short silver hair and multiple silver earrings, stood over a glowing multi-monitor setup. She looked up as Julian and Clara entered, tapping a few keys to pull up a complex web of financial transactions cascading down the center screen.

“Mr. Vance, Mrs. Reynolds—or, pardon me, Ms. Sterling-Vance,” Chloe corrected herself smoothly, offering a crisp nod. “We decrypted the primary hard drive seized from Arthur’s home office safe. Take a look at these transaction timestamps.”

Clara stepped closer to the screen, her eyes scanning the neat rows of numerical data. Her breath hitched. The offshore accounts weren't just draining money from Reynolds Logistics; they were funneling massive, systematic payouts to a numbered Swiss account that hadn't been touched in years—until tonight.

“The Victoria Foundation,” Clara whispered, reading the routing designation. “Victoria set up this blind trust six months ago, right around the time she insinuated herself into Arthur’s social circle.”

“More than that,” Chloe added, tapping another key to pull up an encrypted email archive. “Look at the correspondence between Victoria and Arthur’s personal legal counsel. She engineered the entire plot to push you out of the company, force a unilateral divorce, and liquidate the remaining physical assets into her private Swiss holdings before the federal audit hit.”

Julian stared at the screen, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.

“She didn't just want Arthur as a trophy husband. She was using him as a blunt instrument to systematically corporate-raid your life, Clara.”

Clara’s hands clenched into tight fists at her sides, a cold fury replacing the lingering exhaustion in her chest. She had spent years believing she was simply unloved, discarded because she wasn't glamorous enough for Arthur's new world. To discover she was the victim of a calculated, predatory conspiracy engineered by a social-climbing opportunist changed everything.

“Where is Victoria now?” Clara asked, her voice dangerously steady.

Chloe smirked, typing a final command that brought up a live GPS tracking log overlaid on a regional map.

“Our network trackers pinged her private jet’s transponder five minutes ago. She’s currently airborne, heading out over the Atlantic toward a private airstrip in the Caymans.”

Julian stepped forward, reaching for his encrypted satellite phone.
