Chapter 11 - The Inheritance Trap

Richard Sterling’s gaze swept across the opulent penthouse office, lingering for a fraction of a second on the newly minted corporate charter bearing Clara’s name before shifting toward his aging father. Marcus stood frozen near the desk, his knuckles white against the mahogany, his chest rising and falling in shallow, ragged gasps.

“You’re dead,” Marcus rasped, his voice trembling with a mixture of profound shock and simmering rage. “We held a state funeral. Your body was never recovered, but the wreckage of your vessel was found at the bottom of the shelf. I spent twelve years mourning you, Richard.”

Richard let out a short, bitter laugh that lacked any warmth, stepping further into the room with slow, deliberate strides.

“A convenient narrative, wasn't it?” Richard replied, his voice dripping with venom. “The rebellious son lost at sea, leaving the old man free to hand over the keys of the empire to Julian and his new corporate pets. But accidents at sea are remarkably easy to orchestrate when you pay the right maritime inspectors to look the other way.”

Julian stepped smoothly in front of Clara, his broad shoulders blocking Richard’s line of sight, his voice cutting through the tense air like a razor.

“Watch your tongue, Richard,” Julian warned, his dark eyes locking onto his estranged uncle with lethal intensity. “You walked away from this family twelve years ago under a cloud of federal embezzlement charges. You forfeited every right to the Sterling name the moment you fled the country.”

Richard smirked, unbuttoning his worn trench coat to reveal an immaculate, expensive silk suit underneath that completely contradicted his weathered appearance. He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a thick, leather-bound folio stamped with gold notary seals.

“I didn't forfeit anything, Julian,” Richard countered smoothly, tossing the heavy folio onto the desk right in front of Clara. It landed with a dull, heavy thud. “The original family charter states quite clearly that any primary bloodline heir returning before the final corporate dissolution retains absolute veto power over all secondary mergers. And since my death was never legally certified by a probate court—thanks to my dear father’s sentimental refusal to sign the death certificate—I am still the primary trustee.”

Clara looked down at the leather folio, her mind racing. She didn't flinch or shrink back. She reached out, picked up the document, and began flipping through the yellowed, water-damaged pages with steady, methodical precision.

“You’re quoting the 1994 secondary amendment,” Clara said, her voice clear, calm, and entirely unshaken.

Richard paused, his smug expression flickering for a fraction of a second as he registered her composure.

“What of it?” Richard demanded.

“What of it?” Clara repeated, looking up from the pages straight into his eyes. “You conveniently omitted the 1998 codicil ratified by the entire board—including Marcus—which dictates that any heir who abandons their fiduciary duties for a period exceeding five years automatically forfeits their voting rights to the managing chairwoman.”

Richard’s face hardened into a mask of pure fury. He slammed his hand down flat against the mahogany desk, leaning forward into her space.

“That codicil was drafted under duress while I was recovering from injuries abroad! It’s legally unenforceable!”

“It was notarized by federal magistrates and countersigned by the international trade commission,” Julian chimed in coldly, stepping in closer so his imposing height overshadowed Richard completely. “Which means your return doesn't give you control over Vance Global, Richard. It simply gives the federal prosecutors who have been tracking your offshore accounts for the past decade a very convenient place to slap the handcuffs on you.”

Richard’s eyes widened in sudden, stark panic as the trap snapped shut around him. Before he could turn toward the private elevator, heavy footsteps echoed from the corridor behind him.

Two federal agents stepped out of the stairwell, their badges gleaming coldly under the penthouse lights.

“Richard Sterling,” the lead agent announced, stepping forward with a pair of steel cuffs ready. “You’re under arrest for international fraud and asset abandonment.”
