Chapter 12 - Ashes and Diamonds

The heavy steel cuffs clicked shut around Richard Sterling’s wrists with a sharp, final sound that echoed through the silent penthouse. He didn't struggle—he knew the math of his situation as well as anyone, his escape routes cut off by federal jurisdiction and unbreakable corporate charters. As the agents hauled him backward toward the private elevator, Richard turned his head, fixing Clara with a long, venomous glare.
“You think this makes you safe?” Richard hissed through clenched teeth as the elevator doors slid open. “Arthur was just a symptom. The people who backed him—the ones pulling the strings behind the international shipping grids—won't let a nobody from the streets keep what she hasn't earned.”
The doors closed, cutting off his voice and plunging the room back into a heavy, suffocating silence.
Marcus Sterling slumped down heavily into the leather armchair behind his desk, looking suddenly every bit of his eighty-odd years. The return and subsequent rearrest of his long-lost son had drained the last reserves of his iron strength. He pressed a trembling hand against his forehead, closing his eyes.
“I’m sorry you had to witness that, Clara,” Marcus whispered, his voice cracking with exhaustion. “I thought I buried my greatest failure twelve years ago. It turns out he just came back to haunt us.”
Clara walked around the desk, placing a gentle, reassuring hand on the old man’s frail shoulder.
“You didn't fail, Marcus,” she said softly. “You survived. And so did I.”
Julian watched them from across the room, his dark eyes tracking Clara with a mixture of deep respect and lingering caution. Richard’s parting words hung in the air like poison smoke. The people who backed him. Julian knew his uncle wasn't bluffing; the offshore syndicates funding Arthur and Victoria’s corporate-raiding operation were part of a massive, shadowy cartel that operated far above standard corporate law.
“Richard was right about one thing,” Julian said quietly, walking over to join them by the desk. “Arthur wasn't operating alone. The money that funded his initial hostile acquisition of your early patents didn't come from his personal accounts. It came from the Blackwood Syndicate—a cartel of shadow investors who specialize in crushing independent innovators and swallowing their intellectual property.”
Clara frowned, her mind immediately connecting the dots of the financial architecture she had audited earlier that morning.
“The Blackwood Syndicate,” she murmured. “That explains the impossible valuation spikes in Arthur’s early balance sheets. He was just a front man for a much larger predator.”
“And now that Arthur is in federal custody and Richard’s assets are frozen, the Syndicate’s primary investment vehicle in this city has imploded,” Julian added, his jaw tightening. “Which means they aren't going to send lawyers next time. They’re going to send enforcers.”
Marcus opened his eyes, straightening up in his chair with a renewed, steely spark of defiance.

“Then we don't wait for them to come to us,” Marcus declared, slamming his hand onto the desk. “We take the fight straight to their front door. Julian, activate the global asset freeze on every subsidiary tied to Blackwood. Clara, prepare the public releas
