Chapter 2 - The Weight of Velvet

The crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom cast a blinding, brilliant light over the sea of high-society faces that turned in unison as Julian Vance entered the hall with Clara by his side. The murmur of polite conversation died instantly, replaced by a sharp intake of collective breath. Clara kept her chin high, though her heart hammered frantically against her ribs like a trapped bird. The heavy white coat had been checked at the foyer, revealing the midnight-blue silk gown beneath—a dress Arthur had called too plain, yet under the warm interior lighting, it gleamed with understated elegance. Julian’s hand remained firmly, respectfully positioned at the small of her back, a physical anchor grounding her amidst the predatory stares of the city’s elite.
Across the room, standing near the mahogany bar with a glass of vintage scotch in hand, Arthur froze. His knuckles turned white around the crystal tumbler as his eyes locked onto Julian and Clara. Victoria stood beside him, her painted smile faltering into a hard, venomous line as she realized the outcast she had helped banish to the driveway was now walking through the main hall on the arm of the most powerful investor in the country. Arthur set his drink down with a sharp clink that made nearby guests flinch, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He abandoned his conversation mid-sentence and began cutting a furious path through the crowd toward them.
“Clara, what is the meaning of this childish stunt?” Arthur hissed, appearing before them like an apparition of pure rage. He tried to grab Clara’s bare wrist, his fingers curling aggressively toward her skin.
Julian’s reaction was instantaneous. With a swift, quiet motion, he stepped smoothly between Arthur and Clara, blocking Arthur’s reach with his broad shoulder. Julian’s dark eyes locked onto Arthur’s with an absolute, chilling stillness that made the younger man involuntarily step back.
“Keep your hands to yourself, Arthur,” Julian said, his tone dangerously low, carrying a weight that demanded absolute obedience. “Or you might find your entire evening cut remarkably short.”
Arthur flushed a deep, mottled red, humiliated by the subtle gasps of onlookers who had gathered to watch the spectacle. He forced a strained, tight-lipped smile, trying to salvage his rapidly crumbling dignity.
“Mr. Vance, surely you don't understand. My wife here is… unwell. She suffers from episodes of erratic behavior. I was merely trying to escort her back to our vehicle for her own safety.”
Clara stepped out from behind Julian’s broad frame, her voice steady, clear, and carrying an inner steel Arthur had never heard before.
“I am not unwell, Arthur. And I was never your wife’s responsibility to lock away.”
Arthur glared at her, venom dripping from his teeth as he leaned in close.
“You insignificant little ungrateful leech. You are nothing without my name, and the moment we leave this room, I will make sure you have nothing left at all.”

Before Clara could formulate a reply, a sharp chime echoed through the ballroom's sound system, and the heavy oak doors at the far end of the hall swung wide open, revealing a towering figure framed in light.
