Chapter 4

As the tactical guards escorted Julian Vance out of the grand ballroom, the heavy oak doors swung shut, sealing away the spectacle and leaving only the rhythmic patter of the storm outside. The remaining guests dispersed in hushed, nervous whispers, anxious to distance themselves from the disgraced corporate raider before federal investigators began subpoenaing the evening’s attendees.

Elena stood beside her father near the dais, the adrenaline of the confrontation slowly giving way to a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. Arthur placed a heavy, reassuring hand on her uninjured shoulder, his expression softening from the stern commander he had been moments before.

"You took a massive risk going solo against his board, El," Arthur said quietly, his voice carrying the deep gravelly warmth she had known since childhood. "I taught you how to run a ledger, not how to play Russian roulette with corporate syndicates."

"I had to draw him out, Dad," Elena replied, looking down at the faint red marks left by the glowing cuffs. "If I hadn't let him back me into this corner, we never would have gotten the biometric signature needed to unlock his primary offshore mainframe. It was the only way to expose the shell companies legally."

Clara walked over, holding a warm cup of black coffee she had managed to procure from the catering staff. She handed it to Elena with a sympathetic smile. "You scared half the city tonight, Elena. But you won. The federal regulators are already downloading the decrypted ledgers from the ballroom console."

Elena accepted the cup, feeling the comforting warmth seep into her fingers. She looked at Clara, remembering the moments of doubt when Clara had seemed to side with Julian during the hostile takeover meetings weeks ago. "Thank you for staying, Clara. I know Julian made life impossible for the marketing department."

"I never believed his numbers," Clara said firmly, adjusting the strap of her deep red gown. "No one grows a billion-dollar logistics firm in six months without cutting throats or cutting corners. I was just waiting for the right moment to hand over the internal email threads."

Arthur nodded approvingly. "Loyalty isn't bought with stock options, Clara. It’s earned in the trenches when the freight trucks are stalled in a blizzard and everyone else has gone home to sleep. That’s a lesson Julian Vance was too arrogant to ever learn."
