Chapter 2

Arthur Sterling stepped forward into the ballroom, his polished leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the marble floor. The tactical guards moved with silent, synchronized precision, securing the perimeter and cutting off every exit route Julian Vance had planned for his escape. The guests, high-society figures accustomed to manipulating political and financial markets, shrank backward into the shadows of the pillars, terrified of the sudden shift in power.
Julian’s arrogant smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his dark eyes narrowing as he assessed the unexpected breach. He had calculated every variable, bribed every corporate board member, and neutralized every regulatory watchdog. Yet, he had underestimated the raw, foundational loyalty of a father who had built his empire from the ground up, starting behind the wheel of a single freight truck decades ago.
"Arthur," Julian said smoothly, attempting to regain his composure as he adjusted his bowtie. "You're trespassing on a private shareholder acquisition. Elena legally signed away her voting rights under duress—well, metaphorical duress. The contracts are already transmitted to the servers."
"The servers are currently experiencing a catastrophic routing error," Arthur replied evenly, stopping ten feet from the podium. He did not raise his voice; his commanding presence was enough to silence the room. "My logistics network isn't just steel and rubber, Julian. It’s a closed-loop infrastructure that doesn't recognize hostile takeovers executed by corporate thieves."
Elena watched her father, a profound sense of relief washing over her bruised shoulders. The glowing cuffs on her wrists began to shift from a steady blue to a pulsing amber as her biometric data stabilized under his reassuring gaze. She remembered the early days, long before the high-rise offices and global conglomerates, when her father taught her that true wealth was measured by integrity, not stock tickers.
"Cut her loose," Arthur commanded, nodding to the lead tactical guard.

Two heavily armored operatives stepped forward with specialized hydraulic cutters. Julian made a sharp movement toward his pocket, reaching for a secondary override transmitter, but one of the tactical guards leveled a non-lethal deterrent directly at his chest. Julian froze, his fingers hovering millimeters from the device, the triumphant facade finally cracking into genuine panic.
"Don't do it, Julian," Clara called out from the background, her voice trembling but clear. For the first time all evening, she stepped out from the shadow of the pillar, her deep red gown whispering against the floor. She had seen too many people ruined by Julian’s ruthless ambition, and she refused to watch him commit treason against the very foundation of the city's economy.
