Chapter 11

The drive back down the mountain highway felt different. The oppressive tension that had hung over the air since the night of the ballroom gala had lifted, replaced by a quiet, resolute calm. By the time the utility truck pulled into the underground parking garage of Sterling headquarters in downtown Seattle, the midday sun was breaking through the lingering cloud cover, reflecting brightly off the glass and steel facades of the financial district.

Elena and Arthur took the private elevator directly up to the executive suite. Clara was waiting for them in the conference room, her tablet in hand, a look of profound astonishment on her face.

"You won't believe the morning briefings," Clara said before they even had time to sit down. "Federal regulators just confirmed that Julian’s entire offshore network collapsed simultaneously about an hour ago. Every shell company linked to the ballroom takeover has been liquidated, and his personal assets have been seized under anti-corruption statutes."

Elena tossed her jacket onto the back of her chair and took her seat at the head of the table. "The digital purge worked. Marcus provided the master backdoor keys from his mountain rig."

"Marcus Vance?" Clara’s eyes widened in surprise. "I thought he disappeared off the grid twenty years ago after his own regulatory scandal."

"He’s still keeping score," Arthur remarked, taking a seat beside his daughter and pouring himself a cup of coffee. "And Julian’s amateurish attempt at corporate raiding offended his old-school sensibilities. Sometimes, even hermits have standards."

The intercom on the conference table chimed softly. The head of legal security spoke with an urgent tone. "Ms. Sterling, we have federal marshals downstairs requesting a formal briefing regarding the asset recovery. They also have a representative from the district attorney's office who wants to discuss Julian Vance's upcoming arraignment."

"Send them up," Elena replied without hesitation. "And ensure the press pool waiting in the lobby receives our complete transparency report on the attempted takeover."

Clara smiled, the lingering anxiety of the past week finally melting away. "I'll handle the press briefing, Elena. Let's make sure the city understands that the Sterling Corporation isn't just surviving—we're setting a new standard for corporate integrity."
