Chapter 9 - The Ghost of Blackwood Bay

The freezing spray of the Atlantic dashed relentlessly against the jagged black rocks of the hidden cove. Director Sterling dragged his waterlogged, shivering body onto the narrow strip of pebbled beach, collapsing face-first into the damp gravel. His expensive Italian suit was utterly ruined, caked in mud, seaweed, and salt. A few feet away, Arthur Vance hauled himself out of the surf with astonishing physical strength, his beige jacket drenched and clinging tightly to his broad shoulders, yet his breathing remained remarkably steady.
Parked just above the beach on a narrow rocky ledge, the black Maybach’s engine idled quietly, its high beams cutting through the heavy coastal fog. The rear passenger door swung open, and six-year-old Lily peered out anxiously into the darkness, clutching her green dress.
"Mr. Arthur!" Lily cried out, her small voice carrying over the sound of the crashing waves. She scrambled out of the car, ignoring the lawyer’s protests, and ran down the gravel slope toward them.
Arthur met her halfway, kneeling down despite his wet clothes and wrapping his arms around the little girl in a protective embrace.
"I’m here, Lily. I’m safe," Arthur murmured, kissing the top of her light brown head.
The chief legal counsel stepped out of the Maybach, holding a warm woolen blanket which she immediately draped over Sterling’s shivering shoulders. She stared at Arthur in sheer disbelief as he stood up, holding Lily’s hand.
"Chairman... we heard gunfire from the cliffs," the lawyer reported, her voice shaking slightly. "Are the federal units in position?"
"They are moving in now," Arthur said, his gray eyes fixed on the looming, gothic silhouette of Blackwood Bay mansion high above the cliffs. "Marcus triggered the perimeter alarms when he fired inside the foyer. By morning, every asset he controls will be frozen by federal mandate."
Sterling shivered violently beneath his blanket, his teeth chattering so hard he could barely form words. "He... he tried to kill us, Mr. Vance. Your own nephew... he had a squad of killers."
Arthur looked down at the pathetic Astoria Hotel director with a gaze devoid of pity. "Greed is a disease, Sterling. It rots the mind long before it destroys the soul. You served a master who cared only for himself, and you nearly paid for it with your life."
Sterling bowed his head in profound shame, pulling the wool blanket tighter around his chest. "I was blind, sir. I thought power was measured by the title on a door and the size of a paycheck. I was wrong."
"At least you survived to learn the lesson," Arthur replied coldly. He turned his attention back to his lawyer. "Did the financial transfer to the orphanage trust go through before Marcus locked the accounts?"
The lawyer nodded firmly, tapping her tablet screen to display a green verification checkmark. "Yes, Chairman. Forty million dollars recovered from the Cayman shell accounts, plus an additional twenty million seized from Marcus’s personal offshore holdings under federal anti-corruption statutes. The foundation is fully funded for the next fifty years."
Lily looked up at Arthur, her wide brown eyes reflecting the dim headlights of the Maybach. "Does that mean the other children will be safe now?"
A soft, genuine warmth broke through the cold, weathered exterior of the billionaire patriarch. He smiled down at the six-year-old orphan, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of light brown hair from her forehead.
"Yes, Lily," Arthur said softly. "Because of you, thousands of children will never have to worry about where their next meal comes from, or who will protect them when the world turns its back."
Suddenly, the night sky above the Blackwood Bay estate erupted in a brilliant flash of red and blue light. A fleet of federal tactical helicopters crested the ridge, their powerful spotlight beams sweeping across the mansion grounds as heavily armed federal agents fast-roped onto the roof and surrounding courtyards. Sirens wailed faintly in the distance, echoing across the dark ocean waters.
Marcus’s reign of terror had finally come to a crashing, undeniable halt.
Arthur turned away from the spectacle, opening the rear door of the Maybach for Lily.
"Get inside, little one," Arthur instructed gently. "It’s time to leave this place behind forever."
As Lily climbed into the luxurious leather interior, Arthur paused, looking back toward the dark ocean one last time. But as he turned to enter the vehicle himself, a sudden, sharp sound froze him in his tracks.

The unmistakable click of a sniper rifle bolt being drawn back echoed from the ridge directly above them.
