Chapter 3 - The Weight of Heritage

The private elevator of the Astoria Hotel ascended silently, cutting through the architectural marvel of steel and glass with ruthless efficiency. The plush carpeting beneath their feet muffled every sound, isolating them from the chaotic noise of the lobby below. Arthur Vance stood erect, his posture defying his seventy-eight years, holding the small hand of six-year-old Lily with a protective grip. In the corner of the mahogany-paneled car, Director Sterling stood rigid and silent, his hands clasped tightly together, sweating profusely under his pristine collar. Thomas had already been dragged away by security, his uniform stripped of its golden name tag.

"Mr. Vance, I assure you that our internal vetting process will be completely overhauled by tonight," Sterling whispered, his voice trembling in the confined space. "We will ensure no employee with such deplorable manners ever steps foot on this floor again."

Arthur did not even look at the hotel director. His gaze remained fixed on the glowing digital floor numbers ticking upward toward the penthouse suite.

"You talk about vetting, Sterling, yet you kept a viper in your nest for five years," Arthur said, his voice dangerously calm. "My nephew Rogo—or Thomas, as he preferred to be called while hiding behind a fake surname—thought he could bleed my European accounts dry while playing Lord of the Lobby."

Sterling swallowed hard, the revelation hitting him like a physical blow. "Rogo Vance? The disgraced heir? We were told he was traveling abroad for humanitarian work."

"He was hunting for my will," Arthur stated simply.

The elevator bell chimed softly, and the heavy bronze doors slid open to reveal the breathtaking expanse of the presidential penthouse. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the glittering city skyline, framed by priceless modern art and minimalist leather furniture. It was a sanctuary of absolute wealth and power, completely detached from the struggles of ordinary people.

Arthur walked out of the elevator, leading Lily into the vast living room. The little girl’s eyes widened in wonder as she looked at the crystal chandelier hanging above them like a frozen waterfall of light.

"Do you like it here, Lily?" Arthur asked, releasing her hand and walking over to a mahogany desk to pour a glass of sparkling water.

"It’s very big," Lily answered honestly, clutching her green dress with her small fingers. "And very cold. Where are your toys?"

A rare, genuine smile touched the corners of Arthur’s mouth. He walked back and knelt beside her. "I used to have many toys, Lily. Companies, ships, buildings. But I realized that none of them could keep me warm when I was truly alone."

Sterling hovered awkwardly near the entrance, not daring to sit or speak without permission. "Sir, should I have room service send up a proper meal for the child? Or perhaps contact her parents?"

Arthur’s expression hardened instantly. The warmth vanished from his eyes, replaced once again by the cold steel of a multi-billionaire patriarch.

"Her parents are dead, Sterling," Arthur said flatly. "Killed in a factory fire three months ago. A fire that was intentionally set to cover up embezzlement."

Sterling gasped, taking a step backward. "Good God... you don't mean—"

Before Sterling could finish his sentence, the heavy oak service door at the back of the penthouse clicked open. A tall, sharply dressed woman in a designer gray pantsuit stepped into the room, holding a thick leather briefcase. Her face was pale, and her hands shook as she looked directly at Arthur.

"Chairman Vance," she reported, her voice breathless. "We checked the offshore accounts linked to Thomas. The transfer to his Swiss account was completed just ten minutes ago."

Arthur stood up slowly, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "How much?"

May you like

"All of it," she whispered, her eyes darting toward Sterling. "Every single cent of the Vance Foundation emergency reserve. Forty million dollars is gone."
