Chapter 1 - The Shattered Illusion

The heavy marble floor of the grand Astoria Hotel lobby echoed with the sharp, metallic clatter of loose change scattering across the pristine surface. Arthur Vance, a seventy-eight-year-old titan of industry disguised in a worn beige jacket and gray stubble, kept his hand extended just above the armrest. He looked down at the bright copper and silver coins rolling away from his leather shoes, his expression cold and carefully detached. Beside him, Thomas, a thirty-year-old hotel employee in a crisp navy blue suit, gripped the rubber handles of the wheelchair with practiced indifference.
"Don't feed street trash," Arthur said, his voice rasped with intentional cruelty, though his eyes remained sharp and calculating.
Kneeling on the cold stone, six-year-old Lily ignored the humiliation and reached for the coins. Her long light brown hair fell over her green dress as her small fingers gathered the scattered wealth. Thomas scoffed quietly, his fingers tightening on the wheelchair handles, ready to push the old man away from the humiliating scene before management noticed.
"You should know better than to touch filth like that, little girl," Thomas muttered, his voice dripping with condescension.
Lily stood up quickly, clutching the coins in her small fist, and stepped directly into their path. Her brown boots planted firmly against the marble, blocking the revolving doors.
"Stop!" Lily said, her voice steady and echoing across the quiet lobby. "He didn't hurt anyone."
Arthur gripped the wooden armrests. With an astonishing burst of strength that defied his frail appearance, he stood straight up, adjusting his beige jacket with absolute calm. Thomas stared, his jaw dropping in utter disbelief as the paralyzed man suddenly towered over him.
"Uncle Rogo?" Arthur asked, locking his piercing gaze directly onto the hotel employee's horrified face.
Thomas stumbled backward, his carefully maintained composure shattering instantly into a mask of pure terror.
Arthur turned his stern glare from the trembling employee down to the brave young girl holding his money.
"She stays, you leave," Arthur commanded.
May you like
Thomas tried to speak, but no sound came out. The manager of the hotel was walking toward them with heavy, deliberate steps.
