Chapter 10 - The Final Bullet

The metallic click of the rifle bolt echoed sharply across the quiet pebbled beach, cutting through the distant wail of police sirens and the crash of the ocean waves. Director Sterling froze mid-shiver beneath his woolen blanket, his eyes widening in stark, absolute terror. The chief legal counsel gasped, dropping her tablet onto the gravel as she threw her hands up instinctively.
Arthur Vance did not panic. With the cold, calculated precision of a seasoned veteran who had survived decades of corporate warfare and assassination attempts, he moved instantly.
"Get down!" Arthur roared, shoving the lawyer backward against the side of the Maybach while simultaneously diving toward the open rear door to shield six-year-old Lily with his own body.
Crack!
A high-velocity sniper round tore through the humid coastal air, striking the bulletproof glass of the Maybach’s rear window with a deafening explosion of spiderweb cracks, though the reinforced laminate held firm.
High up on the rocky ridge overlooking the cove, a solitary figure stood silhouetted against the pale moonlight, holding a long-range tactical rifle with smoke still curling from the muzzle. It was Marcus Vance, desperate and cornered, his tailored suit torn and his face smeared with soot and blood.
"Uncle!" Marcus screamed down from the cliff, his voice cracking with unhinged fury. "If I don't get the empire, nobody does! We die together!"
Marcus worked the bolt again, lining up his crosshairs directly on the open doorway of the Maybach where Arthur shielded little Lily.
Before Marcus could pull the trigger a second time, a deafening roar erupted from directly overhead. One of the federal tactical helicopters that had secured the mansion crested the ridge line, its high-intensity searchlight instantly blinding Marcus with a searing pillar of white light.
"Drop the weapon! Federal agents! Drop the weapon now!" a voice boomed from the helicopter’s external loudhailer, vibrating across the entire cove.
Marcus shielded his eyes with one hand, staggering backward on the narrow cliff edge, desperately trying to reacquire his target through the blinding glare.
"Never!" Marcus screamed back, raising the rifle barrel toward the cockpit of the hovering aircraft.
Rat-tat-tat-tat!
A controlled burst of non-lethal tactical beanbag rounds from the federal sharpshooter slammed into Marcus’s chest with tremendous kinetic force, knocking the rifle from his grip and sending him tumbling backward off the rocky ridge.
With a sickening thud, Marcus landed hard on an outcropping of jagged rocks halfway down the cliff, sliding the rest of the way into a shallow tide pool where he lay motionless, groaning in pain as handcuffs were immediately snapped onto his wrists by federal agents who rappelled down seconds later.
Inside the Maybach, the heavy silence returned, broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the cooling engine.
Arthur slowly lifted himself off the floorboards of the car, checking Lily carefully. The little girl was shaking slightly, clutching her green dress, but her brown eyes remained clear and brave.
"Are you okay, Mr. Arthur?" Lily whispered, her small hand reaching out to touch his weathered cheek.
"I am entirely unharmed, Lily," Arthur said softly, a deep, profound sense of relief washing over his features. He helped her sit up straight, then turned his gaze toward the open door where Sterling and the lawyer stood trembling.
"Is it... is it over?" Sterling whispered, clutching the woolen blanket around his shoulders like a shroud.
Arthur stepped out of the vehicle, straightening his drenched beige jacket with his signature dignity. He looked up at the cliff where his nephew was being hauled away in handcuffs by federal authorities.
"It is over," Arthur declared quietly. "The rot has been excised. Now, we begin to build something real."
He turned back to the car, offering his large, warm hand to Lily to help her step out onto the gravel. The little girl took his hand without hesitation, her small fingers wrapping securely around his calloused palm.
"Where are we going now?" Lily asked, looking up at the towering billionaire.
"Home, Lily," Arthur replied, a genuine smile touching his eyes for the first time in decades. "We are going home."
As the Maybach’s engine hummed to life to begin the long drive back to the city, the chief legal counsel’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, glanced at the urgent text message displayed on the screen, and turned to Arthur with an expression of profound shock.

"Chairman... you need to see this immediately. A final document was just unsealed from your late brother’s private vault."
