CHAPTER 8: The Price of Greed

The heavy iron doors of the warehouse swung open again, but this time, flashing blue and red emergency lights flooded the concrete floor.
Detective Sarah Lin of the Federal Financial Crimes Division walked in, flanked by four armed federal marshals. Behind them stood Madame Genevieve and Marcus.
“Pierre Laurent,” Detective Lin announced, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for wire fraud, forgery of historical provenance documents, and conspiracy to commit illegal cultural export.”
Pierre didn’t even struggle as the cold steel snapped around his wrists. He looked up at Julian, his eyes wild with hollow resentment.
“You ruined everything!” Pierre hissed through spit and tears. “You could have ruled this city! You had all the power, all the money! And you threw it in the gutter to live like a beggar!”
Julian walked over and crouched down to Pierre’s eye level. His voice was steady, gentle, yet devastating.
“You spent your whole life pretending to be a master of culture, Pierre,” Julian said. “But you never learned its first lesson: wealth that is hoarded rots from the inside out. True power is having the courage to give it back.”
The marshals hauled Pierre away into the flashing rain.
Genevieve walked up to Julian, placing a warm hand on his shoulder. “It’s over, Julian. Clara’s dream is safe.”

“Not yet, Gen,” Julian said, looking back at the open crates filled with children's art. “This was just clearing the ground. Now we have to build.”
