Chapter 2 - The Cold Steel of Betrayal

The heavy metal of the handcuffs clicked shut around Eleanor’s slender wrists with a finality that echoed through the hollow silence of the banquet hall. The cold steel bit sharply into her skin, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the suffocating wave of dizziness washing over her. She looked up at Julian, pleading with her eyes for him to intervene, to remember the vows they had exchanged in private or the quiet promises whispered over midnight coffee. But Julian had turned his face away, his jaw clenched as he stared fixedly at the floor, refusing to meet her gaze. He had chosen his father and the Vance dynasty over the woman he had sworn to love.

Arthur Vance didn't flinch as the officers took Eleanor by the elbows, guiding her away from the ruins of the wedding cake. He slipped the manila folder back into his tailored jacket with practiced calm, his silver hair gleaming under the chandelier.

"Take her out through the service exit," Arthur instructed the officers in a low, flat tone. "I do not want the press getting wind of this scandal before the market opens on Monday morning."

As the officers began steering Eleanor toward the heavy oak doors at the back of the hall, Victoria stepped out of the shadows, her glittering silver gown rustling softly. She leaned in close, her breath smelling faintly of expensive champagne as she whispered directly into Eleanor’s ear.

"Did you really think an orphan from the lower east side could outsmart us?" Victoria murmured, her voice dripping with venomous triumph. "The game was rigged against you the moment you walked through our front door."

Eleanor wanted to scream, to tear herself away from the guards and demand justice in front of all the elite guests who were now whispering behind gloved hands. But her throat felt entirely dry, choked by a sudden, terrifying realization. The forged documents, the missing family necklace, the sudden ambush by Victoria—it wasn't just a random act of cruelty. It was an execution. Someone inside the inner circle had orchestrated this entire nightmare down to the last detail.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake," Eleanor whispered back, her voice trembling but laced with an unexpected steel. "When the truth comes out, the Vance empire is going to burn to the ground right along with me."

Victoria merely laughed, a short, brittle sound devoid of any real humor. "Let's see how brave you sound after forty-eight hours in an interrogation room with no representation."

The heavy oak doors swung open, pushing Eleanor out from the glittering warmth of the banquet hall and into the cold, damp night air of the courtyard. A black police cruiser idled by the curb, its red and blue lights flashing in a hypnotic, dizzying rhythm against the wet asphalt. The officers shoved her gently into the back seat, the heavy door slamming shut with a dull, hollow thud that cut her off entirely from the outside world.

As the cruiser pulled away from the curb and accelerated down the empty downtown boulevard, Eleanor looked down at her stained blue satin dress. The cake frosting was beginning to dry and flake off onto the rubber floor mat. She took a slow, deep breath, trying to steady her racing pulse. Her fingers brushed against the hem of her dress, searching blindly for the hidden pocket she had sewn in just hours before the wedding. Her heart skipped a beat when her fingertips grazed the small, cold edge of a micro-SD card taped securely inside the lining.
