Chapter 10 - The Shattered Glass Ceiling

The sharp echo of the gunshot reverberated off the concrete walls of the control room, followed immediately by the sound of glass shattering overhead as the bullet embedded itself deep into the acoustic ceiling tiles. Arthur stumbled backward against a server rack, his face contorted in rage as he swung the butt of the revolver down toward Margaret’s shoulder. Margaret cried out in pain as the heavy metal struck her, sending her sprawling across the dusty floorboards.
"Margaret!" Eleanor screamed, rushing forward to pull the older woman away just as Arthur raised the gun barrel back toward them.
Down in the massive boardroom below, absolute pandemonium had erupted. The executives were shouting over one another, scrambling away from the conference table as the live audio feed from the control room continued to broadcast every heavy breath, every curse, and every struggle echoing through the overhead speakers. Julian stood paralyzed behind his chair, staring up at the shattered observation window where smoke was slowly drifting out into the open air.
"Father! Stop!" Julian screamed at the top of his lungs, his voice cracking with desperation as he grabbed a heavy glass water pitcher and hurled it against the locked double doors leading up to the private service stairwell.
Arthur ignored his son entirely, his eyes locked onto Eleanor with murderous intent as he stepped over a tangle of network cables. He pressed the cold steel barrel directly against Eleanor’s forehead, his breathing heavy and erratic.
"You should have stayed in your place, Eleanor," Arthur whispered, his voice dangerously calm amidst the chaos. "You thought you could outsmart thirty years of empire building with a pocketful of stolen files."
Eleanor stared straight down the barrel of the gun, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She didn't flinch, and she refused to look away. Her fingers slowly curled around the micro-SD card still hidden safely inside the palm of her hand.
"The empire is already burning, Arthur," Eleanor said, her voice completely steady, carrying a chilling certainty. "Every single transaction, every offshore account, and every forged signature is currently downloading directly to the Securities and Exchange Commission servers via the automated satellite uplink I triggered before you walked in."
Arthur froze, his eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated panic as he glanced up at the master server rack behind the console, where the status light was blinking a frantic, continuous green. "You... you lied."
"She didn't lie," a familiar, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway behind them.
Arthur whipped around, pointing the revolver toward the entrance, but it was already too late. Detective Marcus Vance stood in the doorway, flanked by four heavily armed federal marshals with their tactical rifles raised and locked directly onto Arthur’s chest.
"Drop the weapon, Arthur Vance," Marcus commanded, his voice ice-cold and absolute. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and the thirty-year-old homicide of Robert Vance."
Arthur stared at the wall of federal tactical rifles, his chest heaving as the gravity of his total defeat finally crashed down upon him. Slowly, deliberately, he let his fingers loosen their grip on the revolver. The heavy firearm slipped from his hand, clattering loudly against the concrete floor.
The federal marshals swarmed forward, tackling Arthur to the ground and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists with practiced efficiency. Margaret pushed herself up from the floor with Eleanor's help, wiping a streak of dust from her cheek as she watched her brother-in-law pinned to the floor in total disgrace.
Downstairs in the boardroom, the double doors finally burst open as Julian charged up the private stairs, bursting into the control room out of breath, his eyes wide with shock as he stared down at his handcuffed father.
"Father... what did you do?" Julian whispered, his voice breaking as he looked between Arthur, Margaret, and Eleanor standing amidst the shattered glass.

Before Arthur could mutter a single word in his defense, the building's emergency fire doors slammed open downstairs, and a swarm of federal agents in tactical gear poured into the boardroom, securing every exit and placing Victoria Vance under immediate arrest where she stood frozen by the podium.
