Chapter 8: Shadows of the Past

The afternoon sun cast long, amber rays across the private library of the Vance estate, illuminating dust motes dancing in the quiet air. Elena sat at a small writing desk near the tall bay windows, nursing a cup of black coffee while reviewing the genealogical charts and corporate audit trails Marcus had compiled. Unlocking her family's history required digging through decades of mergers, acquisitions, and quiet family betrayals that had paved the way for Eleanor Sterling’s hostile takeover.

A soft knock interrupted her focus. Sarah entered carrying a silver tray with a plate of fresh fruit and crackers for Leo, who was quietly playing with wooden blocks in the corner of the room. "There's a visitor at the gate, Elena," Sarah said quietly, her expression tight with concern. "A man. He refused to give his name to security, but he insists he has information regarding the night your father's plane went down."

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. She stood up so quickly her chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. For six years, the official narrative had been engine failure during a sudden Alpine blizzard—a tragic, unavoidable accident. But deep down, amidst the corporate warfare and sudden betrayals, Elena had always suspected foul play.

"Bring him to the conservatory," Elena instructed, her voice steady despite the sudden surge of adrenaline in her veins. "And alert Agent Vance to have a backup unit stationed near the grounds just in case."

Ten minutes later, Elena stood among the blooming orchids and towering palms of the glass-walled conservatory. The rain had begun to mist against the panes outside, blurring the view of the sprawling gardens. The heavy double doors opened, and a weathered man in a worn trench coat stepped inside. His face was lined with deep wrinkles, his eyes darting nervously around the opulent space as if expecting armed guards at any moment.

"You're Arthur Vance's daughter," the man said, his voice raspy and laced with deep anxiety. "You look just like him around the eyes."

"Who are you, and what do you know about the plane crash?" Elena asked directly, stepping forward without a trace of fear.

"My name is Thomas Miller," the man replied, pulling a worn manila envelope from his coat pocket and laying it carefully on a marble plant stand. "I was the senior avionics technician at the Zurich airfield where your father's private jet was serviced before its final flight. For six years, I kept my mouth shut because men associated with Eleanor Sterling threatened to kill my family if I ever spoke a word."

He paused, swallowing hard before meeting her gaze. "It wasn't engine failure, Mrs. Vance. The maintenance logs were falsified. Someone on Eleanor's payroll disabled the primary navigation computer and planted an explosive trigger in the fuel line. It was an assassination disguised as an accident."

Elena felt the room spin for a fraction of a second, the heavy reality of the revelation crashing down upon her. The cold fury that had sustained her through the past twenty-four hours crystallized into a fierce, righteous mission. Eleanor hadn't just stolen a company; she was a murderer.
