Chapter 10: Healing Wounds

The evening shadows lengthened across the manicured lawns of the Vance estate, casting a peaceful, golden glow over the tranquil gardens. Inside the grand living room, a roaring fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace, casting dancing shadows across the mahogany paneling and oil portraits of generations past. Elena sat on a plush velvet sofa, her crimson blazer discarded in favor of a soft cashmere sweater, watching four-year-old Leo build an elaborate tower out of wooden blocks on the Persian rug.
The boy laughed as his tower wobbled and crashed to the ground, scattering blocks in every direction. Elena smiled warmly, crawling down onto the carpet to help him pick them up. For the past six years, every moment of her life had been lived in the shadows—constantly looking over her shoulder, changing names, running from the specter of the powerful woman who wanted them erased. Now, for the first time since Leo was born, the constant, crushing weight of fear was gone.
Sarah entered the room carrying a silver tea service, setting it down on the low oak table before kneeling beside them. "You've been working non-stop for forty-eight hours, Elena," Sarah said gently, handing her a warm cup of herbal tea. "The company is stabilized, the federal indictments are locked in, and the media storm is finally starting to shift toward rebuilding rather than scandal. You need to rest."
"I know, Sarah," Elena sighed softly, blowing on the surface of her tea before taking a small sip. "It just feels surreal. For so long, survival was a full-time job. Now that we're safe, my mind keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop."
"It won't drop," a calm, deep voice echoed from the doorway. Marcus stepped into the living room, holding a thick leather-bound folio. "The federal prosecutor just called. Eleanor Sterling’s defense team has officially advised her to plead guilty to all charges in exchange for dropping the capital conspiracy enhancements. She'll spend the rest of her natural life in a maximum-security facility without the possibility of parole."
Elena closed her eyes for a brief second, feeling a massive, invisible boulder finally lift from her chest. The nightmare was truly over. The woman who had destroyed her family and tried to take her child was facing absolute, permanent defeat.

"Thank you, Marcus," Elena said, looking up at the loyal attorney with profound gratitude. "For everything. You stood by my father, and you stood by me when everyone else ran for cover."
"Arthur Vance was a good man, and you are cut from the exact same cloth," Marcus replied with a respectful nod. "The board has officially ratified your appointment as CEO and Chairwoman of Vance-Sterling Holdings. Tomorrow morning, your first official act will be announcing the establishment of the Arthur and Elena Vance Foundation, dedicating fifty percent of corporate profits to urban rebuilding and child protection services."
