Chapter 7: The Interrogation Room

The fluorescent lights of the downtown federal holding facility hummed with a sterile, soul-crushing intensity. Inside Interrogation Room B, the air smelled of cheap coffee, old paper, and profound despair. Eleanor Sterling sat at the scarred metal table, her form-fitting gold gown now hopelessly wrinkled and stained with spilled champagne, her hair coming undone in loose, frizzy strands. The diamond earrings had been confiscated during booking, leaving her earlobes bare and looking remarkably ordinary. The aura of untouchable superiority was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, trembling fury.
The heavy steel door clicked open, and Elena Vance walked in. She was flanked by two federal marshals, her charcoal pantsuit immaculate, her bruised cheek lightly covered by professional cosmetics that couldn't entirely hide the yellowing skin underneath. Elena pulled out the chair opposite Eleanor, sitting down with slow, deliberate grace. She placed a single manila folder on the metal table between them, her dark eyes locking onto the older woman's dilated pupils.
"You have some nerve showing your face here," Eleanor spat, her voice raspy and devoid of its former aristocratic timbre. "This is a kangaroo court. My lawyers are going to tear these warrants apart before the week is out. You think you've won, but you're just a little girl playing in a shark tank."
"Your lawyers resigned at 8:00 AM, Eleanor," Elena replied calmly, opening the folder to reveal a series of signed bank transfers routed through the Cayman Islands. "When the prosecution presented them with the evidence of your direct wire transfers to the men who attacked me in the parking garage last night, they realized representing a kidnapping conspirator was a fast track to disbarment."
Eleanor flinched, her breath catching in her throat. She stared at the documents, her hands curling into tight fists on the table. "You can't prove I ordered physical harm. That was... that was rogue operatives exceeding their mandate."
"The encrypted audio recording of your phone call with their team leader, captured by federal wiretap thirty minutes before the ambush, says otherwise," Elena said softly, leaning forward. "You didn't just want me to sign away the trust; you wanted me permanently silenced so Leo's existence could never be legally verified. That crosses the line from white-collar crime into attempted murder and conspiracy against a minor."
The color drained completely from Eleanor's face. The realization that she was facing decades in a maximum-security federal penitentiary settled over her like a shroud. She looked at Elena—really looked at her—and saw not the frightened young woman she had bullied six years ago, but the true heir of the Vance dynasty, forged in fire and utterly unbreakable.

"What do you want?" Eleanor whispered, the last remnants of her pride finally shattering. "A settlement? Control of the board? Name your terms."
"There are no terms to negotiate," Elena answered, closing the folder with a quiet, definitive thud. "You took six years of my life, terrorized my son, and murdered my father's peace of mind. I'm not here to negotiate, Eleanor. I'm here to watch the system do to you what you tried to do to us."
