Chapter 8: Inside the Lion’s Den

Tom slipped past the laundry cart, moving with the silent, fluid grace of a seasoned operative. The Ravenscroft mansion was terrifyingly quiet in the absence of its masters. The towering portraits of past generations—men in stiff collars and women in silk gowns—seemed to follow his every step with painted judgment. He reached the heavy double doors of Julian’s private study. The brass doorknob was cold beneath his palm. He tested it gently; it turned without a sound.
Inside, the study was a museum of corporate power and ruthless ambition. Floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves lined the walls, filled with leather-bound volumes on maritime law, high-finance acquisitions, and treatises on political manipulation. A massive oak desk dominated the center of the room, upon which sat a sleek laptop and a small brass-plated wall safe half-concealed behind an oil painting of an old clipper ship.
Tom crossed the thick Persian rug in three silent strides. He reached up, swinging the heavy oil painting outward on its concealed hinges. The electronic keypad of the safe glowed with a faint blue LCD display.
Think, Clara said the combination was Margaret's birthdate plus the shipping line founding year, Tom muttered to himself, pulling a small notebook from his pocket where he had scribbled her notes.
He punched in the numbers: 0-4-1-2-1-8-8-5.
A sharp mechanical click echoed through the quiet room as the heavy steel door of the safe swung open. Inside, neatly stacked rows of bearer bonds, diamond-encrusted jewelry boxes, and notarized offshore account certificates rested on velvet trays. But right in the center sat a plain, silver encrypted flash drive labeled with a small black marker: V.C. - Ledger.
Tom reached in, his fingers closing around the drive just as a sharp, piercing chime echoed through the entire mansion.
Downstairs, the security system’s main console flashed a crimson warning light: Study Vault Accessed - Override Active.
Tom cursed under his breath, snatching the drive and slamming the safe door shut. He spun around toward the study doors, but before he could reach them, the heavy mahogany panels swung open with a resounding crash. Two private security guards in tactical gear stood in the doorway, their hands resting menacingly on the holstered sidearms at their belts.
"Freeze! Don't move an inch!" the lead guard barked, stepping into the room with his baton drawn.

Tom didn't hesitate. Instead of retreating, he lunged forward, using the momentum of his heavy work boots to sweep the guard’s legs out from under him before the man could draw his weapon. The second guard lunged, but Tom ducked beneath his wild swing, delivering a sharp elbow strike to the man's solar plexus that sent him crashing backward into the mahogany bookshelf.
Without looking back, Tom sprinted out of the study, bolting down the grand staircase toward the service wing as alarms wailed frantically through the estate.
