Chapter 11: The Whistleblower’s Choice

The digital files glowing on the laptop screen painted a picture of calculated corporate cruelty that left no room for doubt. Clara scrolled through scanned copies of signed contracts, bank transfer confirmations, and internal email threads between Julian and his mother discussing how to orchestrate her father’s sudden heart attack through manufactured stress and blocked line-of-credit financing.
"Monsters," Martha whispered, staring at the screen with a look of profound disgust. "They didn't just ruin your business, Clara. They murdered your father just as effectively as if they had put a knife in his back."
"And they planned to do the same to me," Clara said, her voice chillingly calm as she saved a complete, encrypted backup of the entire directory to a second thumb drive. "Once the baby was born, I would have had an unfortunate accident on the cliffs, just like they told the staff I did. Margaret would have raised my child as a proper, emotionless Ravenscroft heir, completely cut off from any truth about where he or she came from."
Tom shook his head, leaning forward with a fierce gleam in his eye. "So what's our next move? Do we hand this over to the local police? Because if we go to the county sheriff in Oak Creek, he's a decent man, but Julian’s legal team will bury him in injunctions before the ink is even dry."
"We don't go to the local police," Clara said resolutely. "And we don't go to the federal authorities through normal channels, either—too many people on the inside are on Julian's payroll. We go straight to the State Attorney General’s office, specifically the Special Investigations Division headed by Marcus Vance—no relation, but an honest prosecutor who has spent the last five years trying to nail the Ravenscroft cartel for corporate tax evasion."
Martha nodded approvingly. "Marcus Vance is a bulldog. If you put this drive directly into his hands with a sworn affidavit detailing how it was recovered, he won't be able to ignore it. But to do that safely, we need to get you out of this clinic. Julian's private security won't stop looking for you, and now that they know the safe was breached, they'll tear this county apart trying to find who did it."

"I have a safehouse cabin up in the Cascade foothills," Tom offered immediately. "It belongs to an old hunting buddy of mine who’s been fishing in Alaska for six months. Nobody goes up there this time of year, and the roads are too rough for corporate SUVs."
Clara looked between her two companions, feeling a wave of deep, humbling gratitude wash over her. From the brink of death on a marble balcony, she had found an unbreakable circle of defenders. "Let's pack," she said, sliding the backup drive into her pocket. "We leave for the foothills within the hour."
