Chapter 12: The Mountain Refuge

The Cascade foothills rose out of the mist like ancient stone guardians, their slopes covered in dense pine forests and gray granite boulders slick with autumn rain. Tom’s pickup truck bounced roughly along a logging track that had long since been reclaimed by nature, its headlights cutting jagged beams through the gathering darkness. In the passenger seat, Clara sat with her hands resting protectively over her swollen abdomen, feeling the rhythmic, reassuring movements of her baby.

The cabin was a rustic, timber-framed structure nestled in a secluded valley beside a rushing mountain stream. It smelled of cedar wood, old wool, and pine smoke. Tom quickly unlocked the heavy front door, flicking on a kerosene lamp that cast a warm, golden glow across the cozy interior.

"It's not a mansion," Tom said apologetically, setting a heavy duffel bag down by the woodstove and immediately setting to work kindling a fire. "No running hot water, but the woodstove works, there's a spring-fed cistern outside, and the radio transmitter in the back room is hooked up to an independent generator."

Clara walked over to the small window, looking out into the pitch-black forest. "It's perfect, Tom. It's safe."

Martha, who had followed them in her own car to ensure they weren't tailed, set a box of medical supplies and a secure laptop on the wooden dining table. She walked over to Clara, taking her pulse and checking her blood pressure with practiced care. "Your vitals are stabilizing, Clara, but you need to rest. The stress of the last forty-eight hours has pushed your body to its absolute limit, and you're only three weeks away from your due date."

"I can't rest until this is finished, Martha," Clara said softly, turning to face her. "If Julian manages to push through that hostile acquisition of my father's patents tomorrow at the board meeting, our leverage vanishes. We need to get the encrypted files to Marcus Vance tonight."

Martha opened the secure laptop, plugging in the backup flash drive. She connected a specialized satellite uplink device Tom had retrieved from his truck's emergency kit. "I'm routing this through an encrypted proxy server in Zurich," Martha explained as her fingers flew across the keyboard. "It will bounce the signal through three different international nodes before landing directly on the secure terminal of Special Prosecutor Marcus Vance in the state capital."

Clara stood behind her, watching the progress bar crawl across the screen. At 9:45 PM, a small green dialog box popped up in the center of the monitor: TRANSMISSION SUCCESSFUL - SECURE RECEIPT CONFIRMED BY OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL.

Clara let out a long, shuddering breath, feeling as though a mountain had been lifted off her chest. For the first time since she had been pushed over that marble balcony, she felt the cold grip of fear loosen its hold on her soul.
