Chapter 5: A Game of Chess

Marcus Vance squinted up the staircase, his sharp eyes taking in Elena’s bruised face, her casual clothing, and the unmistakable air of quiet command she projected. He had spent decades dealing with corporate sharks, and he knew the difference between a hysterical fraud and someone holding a winning hand.
“And you must be Elena Southgate,” Marcus said, his voice measured, devoid of the panic that consumed Charlotte and Richard. He walked a few paces toward the base of the stairs, keeping his hands casually inside his trouser pockets. “Word travels fast in this city, but legal documents usually take months to process. What makes you think you can walk into a functioning, fully operational luxury hotel and claim ownership?”
Elena descended the remaining steps, her movements unhurried, until she stood on the same level marble floor as the billionaire developer. She did not shrink from his imposing height or his piercing gaze. “Because the probate ruling two years ago relied on a financial audit that Richard deliberately falsified,” Elena said clearly, her voice carrying across the silent lobby. “My father was incapacitated in a coma when his signature was allegedly obtained for the debt-relief transfer. The state forensic accounting division completed their investigation yesterday afternoon.”
Richard took a threatening step forward, his face mottled with rage. “That is an outright lie! You have no proof! Security, get her out of my sight before I—”
“Before you what, Richard?” Marcus interrupted, holding up a hand to silence his business associate. He kept his eyes fixed on Elena. “She has proof, Richard. Look at your face. You’re sweating through a five-thousand-dollar suit. If she didn’t have proof, you’d have had her arrested five minutes ago instead of standing here negotiating with a trespasser.”
Charlotte let out a sharp gasp of betrayal. “Marcus! Whose side are you on? She’s a nobody!”
“I am on the side of my capital, Charlotte,” Marcus replied coldly, not even glancing at her. He turned his attention back to Elena. “Miss Southgate, you have my attention. What is your proposal? Because tearing down a hundred-million-dollar hotel deal through litigation will tie up this property in court for a decade, and nobody wins in a ruined market.”
Elena met Marcus’s gaze steadily. She knew men like him; they cared only for profit and stability, possessing no loyalty to people, only to leverage. “I don’t want to ruin the hotel, Mr. Vance. I want to restore it. But to do that, the cancer has to be cut out completely.” She turned her head slightly, her eyes locking onto Richard and Charlotte. “Starting with the people who stole it.”

Richard’s expression twisted into a mask of pure malice. Realizing that his legal protections were evaporating and that Marcus was ready to cut him loose, a desperate survival instinct took over. He reached inside his jacket, his hand darting toward his shoulder holster with terrifying speed.
Before Richard could fully draw the concealed weapon, a heavy metallic clatter echoed behind him. One of the senior bellhops, having quietly circled around behind the front desk with a heavy brass luggage cart, slammed the metal bar directly into the back of Richard’s knees. Richard collapsed with a muffled groan, the hidden firearm skittering across the glossy marble floor to come to a rest right at Elena’s feet.
