Chapter 11: The Red Carpet Falls

The grand entrance of the Southgate Hotel was blinding under the glare of camera flashes and television lights. A long red carpet stretched out across the polished stone steps, flanked by towering bronze stanchions and velvet ropes. Luxury sedans and limousines pulled up one after another, discharging local politicians, corporate executives, and society socialites dressed in designer gowns and glittering jewels.

Inside the magnificent lobby, the crystal chandelier blazed with millions of prisms of light, casting a warm, inviting glow over the restored marble floors. A string quartet played classical arrangements from the mezzanine balcony, their music floating gently over the murmuring crowd of well-heeled guests sipping champagne from crystal flutes.

At the center of the foyer stood Marcus Vance, playing the gracious host, greeting arriving dignitaries with practiced charm. But all eyes were searching for someone else—the woman whose mysterious return had sent shockwaves through the city's financial elite earlier that morning. Rumors had circulated wildly through private chat groups all afternoon: Charlotte had been ousted; Richard had been arrested; the original family was back.

At exactly 8:00 PM, the private elevator chime echoed softly through the upper tier of the lobby.

Conversations faltered. Heads turned upward toward the grand staircase.

Elena Southgate descended the marble steps. She walked slowly, composed and utterly unbothered by the sea of staring faces. The black evening gown hugged her frame with quiet authority, and the lingering bruise on her cheek was visible under the chandeliers, a stark, undeniable badge of resilience. She was flanked not by armed guards or nervous attorneys, but by Maya and the senior hotel staff who had kept the building's soul alive through its darkest years.

Flashbulbs erupted like a thunderstorm. Microphones pushed forward from the press pit near the base of the stairs.

Elena stopped on the landing, looking out over the grand lobby that her grandfather had built. The air was thick with tension, curiosity, and the heavy weight of history reclaiming its rightful place.

Marcus Vance stepped forward, holding a microphone connected to the main sound system. He offered Elena a polite, deferential nod, signaling to the crowd that the spotlight belonged entirely to her.

Elena took the microphone from Marcus’s hand. Her voice, calm, clear, and steady, echoed through the vast hall, silencing every whisper in the room.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,” Elena began, her gaze sweeping across the sea of frozen faces, landing briefly on the darkened corner where Charlotte stood watching from the shadows of the mezzanine. “Welcome to the Southgate Hotel. Tonight, we aren’t just celebrating a rebranding. We are celebrating a homecoming.”
