Chapter 4: The Sound of Breaking Glass

Downstairs in the lobby, the initial shock had worn off, replaced by a desperate scramble for survival. Richard paced back and forth across the marble floor, his polished black shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone. Charlotte had collapsed onto a velvet settee, her white dress pooled around her ankles like fallen snow. Her hands trembled as she clutched a glass of water that a terrified bellhop had brought her.
“How is this possible, Richard?” Charlotte hissed, her voice vibrating with suppressed hysteria. “We checked the registry three days ago! Her name wasn’t on any title documents. The probate court ruled in our favor two years ago!”
“Probate court can be appealed if new evidence emerges—evidence involving hidden trusts and coerced signatures,” Richard muttered, his face ashen. He stopped pacing and looked down at Charlotte. “She didn’t just stumble into a deed, Charlotte. She’s been building a case. And judging by the fact that she bypassed the front desk security and walked straight to the executive wing, she has the master administrative keys.”
“Then take them back!” Charlotte snapped, standing up abruptly, the fragile illusion of her composure shattering entirely. “Call our lawyers! Call the board! We cannot lose this hotel. Do you know what my father has invested in this property? My entire social standing, my marriage, everything rests on this grand opening gala tomorrow night!”
“Tomorrow night’s gala is the launch of the new rebranding campaign,” Richard said grimly, rubbing his temples. “If the press finds out that the Southgate family has legally reclaimed the property hours before the ribbon-cutting, our investors will pull out instantly. We will be facing federal wire fraud charges, not just a civil dispute.”
As if on cue, the heavy glass doors of the main entrance swung open, admitting a cold gust of autumn wind. A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped inside, brushing raindrops from his shoulders. It was Marcus Vance, the primary financial backer of Charlotte’s rebranding venture, a billionaire real estate developer known for his ruthless acquisition tactics and absolute intolerance for scandal. He took one look at Charlotte’s tear-streaked face and Richard’s panicked demeanor, and his brow furrowed in sharp irritation.
“What is going on here?” Marcus demanded, his deep voice carrying easily across the cavernous lobby. “I received an anonymous text message stating that the property title is under dispute. Half of my investment team is threatening to pull their capital before the morning wire clears. Explain yourselves, or I walk right now.”
Charlotte rushed toward Marcus, her hands extended in a desperate plea. “Marcus, please, listen to me. It’s a disgruntled former employee—a girl named Elena Southgate. She’s mentally unstable, she broke in, and she’s waving around a falsified document. Richard is handling it right now. Security has the situation completely under control.”

“Is that so?” a cool, calm voice echoed from the grand staircase.
Everyone turned. Elena stood halfway down the sweeping marble stairs, resting one hand lightly on the polished wooden banister. She had washed the blood from her lip and dusted the dirt from her tan tank top, but the bruise on her cheek remained vivid, a badge of the violence used to silence her moments earlier. She looked down at Marcus Vance with an expression of supreme, unbothered authority.
