Chapter 10: The Calm Before the Storm

By mid-afternoon, the Southgate Hotel was a hive of frantic, tightly controlled activity. Florists rushed through the lobby carrying towering arrangements of white lilies and orchids, while lighting technicians adjusted the amber spotlights to wash over the newly restored architectural details. The abstract art installations that Charlotte favored had been boxed up and relegated to the loading dock, replaced by historical photographs of the hotel’s construction era.
Elena stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror in the private penthouse dressing room. She wore a tailored black evening gown—structured, minimalist, and devoid of the flashy sequins or diamonds that Charlotte typically favored. The dress was her mother’s, altered slightly to fit her frame, carrying a quiet elegance that demanded respect rather than attention. She carefully applied a dab of concealer over the fading bruise on her cheek, though she refused to hide it entirely. Let the city see what had been done to her; let them ask questions.
A knock sounded at the heavy oak door. Maya entered, holding a thick manila envelope bearing the stamp of the state supreme court. “The final title transfer documents have been officially filed and recorded. The Southgate Corporation is legally reinstated as the sole managing entity. Richard’s assets have been frozen pending criminal indictment for wire fraud and embezzlement.”
“And Charlotte?” Elena asked without turning away from the mirror.
“She’s currently barricaded in the presidential suite on the floor below, refusing to speak to anyone, threatening lawsuits against the hotel, Marcus Vance, and anyone else within shouting distance,” Maya reported, a faint hint of amusement in her voice. “Her security detail walked off the job an hour ago when they realized their back pay wasn't coming from her personal accounts.”
Elena turned around, smoothing the fabric of her black gown. “Let her rage. By tonight, she won’t even be a footnote.”
Just then, the private elevator chimed, and Marcus Vance stepped into the penthouse foyer. He was dressed impeccably in a charcoal tuxedo, looking entirely unruffled by the chaos of the past twenty-four hours. He spotted Elena as she emerged from the dressing room, and a slow, appreciative smile crossed his features.
“You clean up remarkably well, Miss Southgate,” Marcus said, his voice smooth as polished glass. “Though the bruise on your cheek adds a rather dramatic touch of authenticity to the narrative we’re feeding the press tonight.”
“It’s a reminder of what happens when people underestimate the Southgate family, Mr. Vance,” Elena replied, walking over to pour herself a glass of sparkling water from the bar. “Are the journalists from the financial daily and the architectural gazette confirmed for tonight?”

“In attendance and waiting at the velvet ropes,” Marcus confirmed, taking a sip of scotch from the nearby decanter. “They think they’re covering a standard high-society rebranding gala hosted by Charlotte. They have no idea they’re walking into a corporate coup d’état.”
“Good,” Elena said, setting her glass down on the marble counter. “Let’s go open our doors.”
