Chapter 8

The ninth-floor conference room of Marcus’s downtown law firm offered a panoramic view of the city skyline under a heavy, overcast morning sky. A long mahogany table dominated the center of the room, flanked by leather executive chairs. At one end sat Claire, composed and immaculate in a tailored charcoal pantsuit, reviewing the latest bank statements streaming onto her tablet. At the other end sat Leo, flanked by two expensive corporate attorneys he must have retained through emergency retainers before his credit cards were frozen. Leo looked frantic, his white button-down shirt wrinkled from a sleepless night, his tie missing entirely.
The door swung open, and the court-appointed mediator—a retired federal judge known for his zero-tolerance policy on corporate malfeasance—walked in and took his seat at the center of the table.
"Gentlemen, Mrs. Vance," the judge began, his voice dry and authoritative. "We are here for an emergency settlement conference regarding corporate asset protection, fraudulent proxy filings, and emergency marital separation terms. Mr. Vance, your legal counsel has requested a temporary injunction reversal. The floor is yours, but I suggest you get straight to the point."
Leo’s lead attorney stood up, smoothing his tie. "Your Honor, my client maintains that the corporate restructuring documents executed over the past six months were done with the implied consent of the majority shareholder during her frequent absences. We ask that the asset freeze be lifted so business operations can continue without catastrophic interruption."
Claire didn't flinch. She caught the judge's eye, raised her hand slightly, and slid a thick black binder across the polished mahogany table directly toward the bench.
"Your Honor, with the court's permission, I submit Exhibit A through D," Claire spoke clearly, her voice cutting through the stuffy conference room with absolute authority. "These are certified forensic audits proving that over four point two million dollars in venture capital was systematically diverted from primary R&D accounts into shell corporations controlled jointly by Mr. Vance and an unregistered third party residing in my home without my knowledge."
Leo slammed his hand flat against the table, the sharp crack echoing off the glass walls. "Claire, stop this! We can talk about this privately! You're destroying everything we built!"

"Mr. Vance, sit down and remain silent, or I will have the bailiff remove you for contempt," the judge snapped, leaning forward to inspect the financial diagrams inside Claire’s binder. He flipped through the pages slowly, his eyebrows arching higher with each turn. "Counsel, these wire transfer records and notarized signatures show clear evidence of systematic identity fraud and corporate embezzlement. I see no grounds for lifting the asset freeze. In fact, I am expanding the receivership to include all personal assets currently held in Mr. Vance's name."
Leo collapsed back into his leather chair, the fight completely draining out of him as he realized his elaborate scheme had been dismantled in less than twenty minutes.
