Chapter 5

The glow of the laptop screen cast long, erratic shadows across the ceiling as Claire continued her forensic deep-dive into the corporate servers. Every click of the trackpad revealed another layer of corporate engineering designed to dilute her voting shares. Leo hadn't just been siphoning cash; he had been filing fraudulent board resolutions using notarized proxy signatures that bore an alarming resemblance to Claire’s own handwriting. It was forgery on a grand scale, executed with the cold precision of someone who believed he was untouchable.
Her phone buzzed violently against the mahogany vanity, breaking her concentration. It was Marcus, her chief corporate counsel and loyal ally from the downtown offices. She swiped to answer, pressing the device tightly against her ear as she stood up to pace the length of the bedroom.
"Claire? I got your emergency ping," Marcus’s voice came through crisp and urgent, underscored by the faint clatter of a late-night office still humming with activity. "We’ve locked down the primary operating accounts. No outbound wire transfers can clear without your dual-factor authorization key, which is currently sitting in your possession. But Leo’s team has already filed an emergency injunction in the county court claiming you're incapacitated."
Claire let out a cold, humorless laugh. "Incapacitated? Because I walked into my own kitchen and caught him eating cake with his mistress while my son sat crying on a floor covered in sugar?"
"They’re moving fast, Claire. They anticipated a confrontation sooner or later, and they’ve pre-drafted asset-division motions based on fabricated operational losses," Marcus warned, his tone grave. "If we don't file our criminal counter-affidavits regarding the forged board resolutions by eight o'clock tomorrow morning, a friendly judge could temporarily freeze your operational control under corporate receivership."
"Not on my watch," Claire said, her voice hardening with absolute resolve. "Send me the encrypted template for the emergency fraud injunction. I have the physical audit reports from the Seattle shell companies right here. I’m going to attach the residential property deeds and notarized affidavits from my household staff who witnessed the unauthorized occupancy."
"You have witnesses willing to testify?" Marcus asked, surprise evident in his tone.

"Martha is ready to sign whatever is necessary," Claire confirmed, glancing toward the door where the elderly housekeeper was quietly rocking the infant. "Leo thought he was playing chess, but he forgot who owns the board."
She hung up the phone and sat back down at the desk, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. The corporate battlefield was vast, but Claire was no longer the distracted executive flying blind. She was fighting for her home, her child, and the life she had built from scratch.
