Chapter 7

The first gray streaks of morning light pierced through the tall arched windows of the kitchen, illuminating the dried red stain on the floor where the cake had spilled twenty-four hours earlier. Claire stood by the marble island, drinking a black coffee while reviewing the final draft of the emergency legal filings on her tablet. The house was dead silent, save for the faint hum of the refrigerator. Martha walked in quietly, setting a fresh pot of coffee on the counter before speaking in a low, respectful tone.

"Mr. Leo left about an hour ago, Mrs. Vance," Martha said, keeping her gaze fixed on the floor. "He took his garment bag and drove off in the black sedan. He said he had an early meeting with his attorneys downtown."

"Thank you, Martha," Claire replied without looking up from her screen. "Did Elena and the baby leave with him?"

"No, ma'am. They’re still in the guest wing. She tried to come out to the kitchen around six, but when she saw me cleaning up, she went back inside and locked the door."

Claire nodded slowly. "Let her stay there until the sheriffs arrive with the eviction and asset-freezing orders. I don't want any direct confrontations with her. My legal team will handle the residential occupancy transition legally and quietly."

At that moment, the front doorbell chimed twice—a crisp, professional sound that signaled the arrival of Marcus and two uniformed county sheriff’s deputies accompanied by a court-appointed receiver. Claire walked to the heavy front door and pulled it open, welcoming the officers into the bright modern foyer. The legal paperwork she had spent the night compiling was printed, bound, and neatly organized in a leather portfolio tucked under her arm.

Marcus stepped forward first, his briefcase in hand, looking every bit the seasoned litigator ready for trial. "Morning, Claire. Everything is locked down at the corporate office. The judge signed the emergency asset freeze at 6:30 AM based on the fraudulent signature exhibits you provided. Leo’s personal credit cards and corporate accounts have been temporarily suspended pending forensic audit."

"Good," Claire said, handing the portfolio to the lead deputy. "We also have an unauthorized residential occupant in the guest wing who needs to be served with a formal notice to vacate under the emergency property recovery clause."

The deputies nodded, their expressions professional and entirely unsympathetic to the impending drama. They followed Martha down the hallway toward the guest wing, leaving Claire standing in the foyer with Marcus. The domestic nightmare was transitioning into a cold, mechanical legal reality, and Leo was about to discover just how thoroughly his web of lies had unraveled before the morning sun even hit its zenith.
