Chapter 6

The grandfather clock in the downstairs foyer struck midnight with a resonant, deep chime that reverberated up through the floorboards of the master suite. Toby had finally drifted off to sleep on a makeshift pallet of blankets near the window, exhausted by the emotional turmoil of the day. Claire quietly closed the laptop, stretched her aching shoulders, and stepped out into the dimly lit hallway. She needed air, and she needed to confront the man pacing back and forth across the gallery below.

Leo was standing near the base of the grand staircase, still dressed in his rumpled white shirt, a glass of amber whiskey clutched tightly in his hand. He looked up the moment he heard the soft creak of the floorboards, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. The calm, collected facade of the successful corporate husband had completely disintegrated, leaving behind a desperate man cornered by his own greed.

"Claire, we need to talk," Leo called up, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings with a hollow, pleading tone. "Don't do this over the phone with lawyers. We can settle this like adults, without tearing everything we’ve built apart."

Claire walked slowly down the stairs, her hand sliding smoothly along the polished mahogany banister. She stopped three steps from the bottom, looking down at him with an expression of profound detachment. "We built nothing, Leo. I built a company, a home, and a life. You simply occupied the space and waited for an opportunity to pick the locks."

"That’s not fair," Leo snapped, taking a step closer to the stairs, his whiskey sloshing over the rim of the glass. "You were never here! You spent half the year in airplanes, boardrooms, and international hotels. I was the one managing the day-to-day pressure. I deserved a life too!"

"A life? Is that what you call embezzling corporate funds to buy luxury real estate for Elena and an illegitimate child you hid under my roof?" Claire’s voice didn't rise in volume, but every word cut like a scalpel through the tense midnight air. "You didn't just cheat on a marriage, Leo. You committed corporate fraud, and you endangered my son by leaving him abandoned on a dirty floor while you played domestic house with your mistress."

Leo flinched as if struck physically, the glass trembling in his grip. "Elena was supposed to move out before you returned. My flight tracking app said your seminar ran through Thursday. You weren't supposed to be back until tomorrow night!"

May you like

"And there it is," Claire said bitterly, shaking her head. "It’s not that you're sorry you did it; you're only sorry your tracking app failed you. Your entire existence with me was calculated based on airline schedules and logistical convenience."

She turned on her heel, leaving him standing alone in the cavernous foyer as the midnight chill seeped through the heavy glass front doors.
